I have a new Yamaha AV receiver rx-v381,trying to connect an old CD DVD player, Sony dvp-nc665p. I have audio, no video. No HDMI on CD DVD player. What am I doing wrong? Help!

DVD output (HDMI) to HDMI input on TV will transfer both audio and video from DVD to TV. Audio output on TV to unused Input on Yamaha receiver (Aux, CD, etc.). This hookup will allow DVD and TV channels audio playback through your Yamaha receiver. Remember to test any/all new hookups or connections using minimum settings (volume, etc.), and bring up levels slowly for the initial testing.

You're not going to get any difference using an optical cable. In fact, your receiver cannot look at both jacks at once anyway. If you select an input, it only looks at one jack, it cannot take info from both.

u can make connections only through digital inputs(optical and coaxial). u can connect the digital outputs of ur dvd and cable set top box to the receiver. no way to connect HDMI. HDMI is a high definition media interface. for using it u have to go for a av receiver that supports HDMI.

There are several video and audio inputs named DVD. For video you have HDMI, component and composite. For audio you have standard analog stereo and digital coaxial spdif input.
You need to configure the receiver to use the correct inputs - that means HDMI and coax. Also you need to connect the BD player via coax spdif cable to the receiver, because rx-v365 doesn't support audio via HDMI. If BD player has only optical output, use DTV/CABL HDMI input and DTv/CABL Optical input on the receiver.

Does it work via component or in a different HDMI port? If it does it sounds like either a bad HDMI input on the tv or a bad HDMI output on the receiver.

I would also verify that the receiver is 100% compliant with the HDMI standard as not all devices are.

HDCP is copyright protection for HDMI ensuring that you can't copy the protected material.
Did you connect some new DVD player or new TV to the receiver? However the error should clear once you disconnect everything from HDMI. If not, try to restore the receiver to factory defaults.

You need a coax to RCA converter. Do a google search, Belkin makes one, Radio Shack probably has one too.

Initially, a workaround:

• as you posted, audio out of the DVD goes to the receiver;
• HDMI out of the DVD goes to the Schaub Lorenz LCD.

Even if it were a compatibility issue or HDMI processor issue on the receiver, the above should get you going.

Sounds like a poor grounding issue between the units OR maybe they're not as compatible as the Mfg's say.

Could be a bad HDMI cable also. Most are made in the land of Nanking
