My brushes had 'frozen' in the channels on the brush holders on my miter saw (Hitachi C 10FCE), so the spring would not provide tension (and the motor would not run consistently). I took a pair of small (5") 90 degree bent needle nose pliers, grabbed the lead wire (running through the center of the spring) of each brush and gently, but firmly, pried the brushes out of each brush holder. No lubricants were needed. I did not want to just pull on the brass cap on the brushes, lest the lead wire separate from the cap, or the spring become deformed. Turns out, there was some corrosion on both the brushes AND the brass channels of the brush holders, probably from the saw sitting in moist (humid) air over several seasons, that was binding the brushes in place. With a small slotted screwdriver, I scraped the corrosion off the brushes (easy, since they are carbon) AND off the walls of the brass channels (more delicate work). I reinserted the brushes, checking to be sure they moved freely in the channel, and replaced the covers. The saw works fine. (I ordered a replacement set of brushes for possible future use, as well.)
You might have let the brushes go to long and they are worn so far that they came out of the holders. Maybe try turning the blade backwards while pulling on the brushes.

After removing the black brush caps, take compressed air and blow any debris out. Next take a pair of needle nose pliers and gently pull the brush,,, ( you can use a moderate force). If it does not pull out you may need to remove the black vent cover adjacent and use a tiny screwdriver between the brush and the armature, as there may be a slight burr on the brush. Good Luck.

On the sides of the motor housing there are two small, black screw caps about as big around as a dime. By removing those the brushes will come out. Most come out easily but if they are in very tight, be carefull not to strip out the screw driver slots. The caps are made of a hard plastic that breaks easily and if the slots are stripped out they are very difficult to remove.
