SOURCE: scsi tape drive

Hello Rivcr, 1. Check for a terminator on the back of the scsi unit. 2. Make sure you have power. 3. make sure power switch is on. 4. Select a different scsi id number, not 0 or 1 or 7. Does this help?

SOURCE: I have hp surestore DLT1e drive. Tape cartridge stuck!

For that you can try to press and hold the eject buttonfor 30 seconds if the tape doesn't came out then reflash the drive firmware revision.
After all that is the issue persists you can try to:
manually remove the tape by removing the top cover
Locate recessed thumb wheel
Rotate thumb wheel counter-clockwise until you feel resistance. Wheel may spring back when you release it. This is OK.
Locate hole in bottom of drive. Insert #10 Torx driver and rotate clockwise until tape ejects. If there is a lot of tape on the take up reel, this could take some time.
Rotate thumb wheel clockwise to eject the tape.

SOURCE: forgot service password for HP Surestore Tape Autoloader 1/9 DLT

This legacy devices service password can be reseated by following this steps:

The following is required before resetting the password:

  1. Access to the front panel of the HP Surestore DLT library.
  2. From the Home screen, press Main.
  3. From Main, press Information.
  4. From Information, press More.
  5. From this menu, press Date and Time.
  6. Write down the date (including year) and time.

The display shows a valid date and time
Do the following:
  1. Press the left-most button (button 1). This button is not labeled. A warning message to call service will appear.
  2. Press OK.
  3. The Call Center must then calculate a special password based on the date and time, using the following formula:
    1. (Hours * 1001) + (Days * 101) + Month + Year (all 4 digits) = subtotal
    2. Multiply the subtotal by 123. If this multiplication results in a number greater than 99,999,999 (this should never happen), use the special password of 44122333.
    3. Since the only valid choices are 1-4 for each digit, follow these rules:
      • If the digit=0 (zero), make the digit=1
      • If the digit=9, then make digit=1
      • If the digit>4, subtract 4 from the digit
      • If the digit does not meet any of the above, leave the digit unchanged. If the result is less than 8 digits, add leading 1s to make it eight digits in length.
        NOTE: As an example, 2000 02/07 2:30 is displayed (February 7, 2000 at 2:30). Plugging in the numbers: (2 * 1001) + (7 * 101) + 2 + 2000 = 4711
        4711 * 123 = 59453
Convert all digits to be between 1 and 4 = 131413
Add the leading 1s to make it eight digits long - 11131413
  4. Enter this special code to the front panel.
  5. Press OK. The screen will confirm that the password has been reset.
  6. Set a new password.

SOURCE: 4MM Dat Tapes - not

You're not gonna like it but here it is - the information on those tapes cannot be recovered easily: the old tape unit had its heads slightly misaligned and the data was written on the tape also misaligned so it's not readable on a new unit. The only way to recover the information is to try to replicate the misalignment in another unit and that will be almost impossible - it involves manually adjusting the angle of the shaft of the rotary head by fraction of a degree.

Certance DAT 72 tape drive stopped communicating with PC

We have had the same problems with HP drives and Veritas. In our case it was not the drive per se. While I am assuming that based on the date of your post that you have moved to another solution, however, I will provide for you what we did.

First shut all down, disconnect the tape drive from the scsi cable, then restart. Go into computer management and turn all your backup exec services from auto to manual. Now go to devices and do a rescan. Once this is done and you see no tape drive whatsoever in the devices shut down the server. Reconnect the scsi cable to the drive and restart.

Go back into computer management, back to devices and rescan for hardware changes. Do you see it? If so, good! Sometimes a re-seating of connectors will do that. On the other hand, it could also be a tape driver from Veritas that just doesn't work (my case), take the original driver cd that came with the unit and start that loading up. Can you see it now? Can you use windows backup to access the tape drive? Now go into services and start the services individually. Go into backup exec and see if you can read your tape. Go back to services and reset all services back to auto. If you ever have to reinstall/upgrade backup exec, think twice about using their drivers.

Tape not ejecting from drive after 60 secs pressing eject button. I can hear it 'clicking' but no attempt to eject the tape is made. I would be very grateful for some advice regarding what I might do next.

can you detail the model No or compaq spares No for the drive - the clicking makes it sound to me like a DAT but unable to proceed without more info.

If it is a DAT (compaq used both Sony and HP mechs) try disconnecting the scsi cable from the scsi card, rebooting the drive and trying again.

If that doesnt work try a 00pt screwdriver in the manual eject point of the drive and unload manually (about 1000 turns!)

Failing that try www.tape-drive-repair.com as they are pretty good price wise for a repair / exchange
