SOURCE: garmin gps 12 wont turn on.

Sorry to hear of the dead units. Are you using the correct power cable with a small hole in the centre of the plug? The GPS 12 is strictly limited to 7 volts only. The accessory cigarette lighter cable for this model has a circuit inside to drop the voltage from 12 to 7. Cannot be fixed. There would have been a plastic peg in the back of the GPS socket to prevent anything but the correct voltage Garmin cable being plugged in. Unfortunately these pegs are easily broken off. Yes, they are a good little unit even though well on in years. The next model up - the 12XL - can accept a wide voltage range and does not have the plastic peg.

All the best, Tony at KiwiGPS.

I have a Humminbird 708ci hd si fishfinder. I have issues with it turning off when moving at higher speeds on a little choppy water. I have the basic unit mount. What should I try to fix the issue?

Make sure all your wire and contacts are pressed in good, try taking your finder off the mount hold in your hand while going fast, see if it still goes off, if it does you might have a bad fish finder, or transducer is hitting hull or loose wire some where.

Do a master reset on the unit. restart and cross your fingers. If this does not resolve the problem you probably have an internal fault with the GPS unit.

If you have put power to the gps antenna then there is going to be a problem with your gps antenna. The Humminbird gps antenna gets it power from the unit. If you have done this you will need to contact our customer service group to get it resolved. There number is 800-633-1468.

Turns off

The first thing you need to check is if you have sufficient power going to the fishfinder. Take a multimeter and measure the dc voltage going to the display when the unit is off and also on. If this is below 12 vdc this is your problem. You will need to check for loose connections and possibly replace your battery.

If the voltage is good then the problem lies within the display. Unfortunately, you would have to contact Humminbird directly to return the display for repair or purchase a new fishfinder.
