If this is a failure to recognize the device error, the following from a Garmin article may help:
All current Garmin devices, when connected to a computer, will communicate in either Mass Storage or Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) mode. If the computer is not detecting the Garmin device, there are a few troubleshooting steps that can be done.
Unplug the USB cable from the computer
Turn the device off and then back on again
Plug the USB cable directly into the device and the other end directly into a USB port on the computer and not a hub or docking station
The device should automatically go into Mass Storage or MTP mode, which is indicated by a picture of a GPS device connected to a tower on the Garmin screen.
To check the computer's recognition of the device on a Windows PC click on the Start menu and select (My)Computer. The device will show in this window if the computer recognizes it. On a Mac, the device will show as an icon on the desktop, labeled "GARMIN", or it can be found by selecting Finder from the dock and viewing the device list on the left-hand side menu within the window.
Note: If the computer still does not detect the device, try plugging it into a different USB port. If the problem persists, try another computer, if available. Ensure the USB cable is not connected to a cradle, if one is attached to the GPS.
Here is a link to the Garmin site itself address the issue of an unrecognized device:

And, the following information from another site may help:

You have not indicated the operating system of the computer. Sometimes you can use Garmin Express. Sometimes an older webupdater. It seems to depend upon the OS of the computer and that of the Garmin as to which to use. You may have to contact Garmin help directly if the above is insufficient.

These are the instructions I got from Garmin as how to do the Master reset:
Here are the steps to backing up the
favorites on your unit and then performing the master reset. First, you’ll want
to plug your unit into your computer via USB cable. Once it’s plugged in, you’ll
want to go to My Computer in your start menu or from your desktop and
double-click on the Nuvi. At this point, you should see a few folders, but
you’ll want to double-click on the Garmin folder. Here, you’ll want to look for
the “GPX” folder and you’ll double-click on that. In this folder, you’ll want to
drag and drop the file titled “Current.gpx” to your desktop to copy it. Now you
are able to do the master reset.
To do that, you’ll want to start
with the unit turned off and press and hold on the upper left hand corner of the
touch screen. While holding the touch screen, power the unit on and continue to
hold. You should get a message that asks if you really want to go into
maintenance mode and you’ll want to select “Yes”. At this point, you’ll want to
select “clear user data” and then select “Yes” when it asks you if you really
want to clear user data. Now, the unit should restart and you’ll want to take it
where it has a clear view of the sky and let it sit for up to 30 minutes to
acquire satellites. If after 30 minutes it does not acquire satellites, you can
go ahead and reply back to me.
Either way, once we have your unit
back working again, you can follow the first set of steps again to get to the
GPX folder and drag the “Current.gpx” folder from your desktop to that folder on
your unit. This will replace your favorites.

I had same problem. I called Garmin customer service who connected me to a computer rep. Garmin hooks with your computer that you have your Garmin plugged into. They can upload the proper software in no time at all.
The rep told me that after I updated my Garmin I might have turned off the unit before it completed updating the new software. You need to wait until the screen with "Where to?" appears.
It works great now. Prepare to wait on hold for a while. I waited just over an hour on Monday, their busiest day.
SOURCE: Webupdater won't detect Garmin unit
I have the same problem of the Nuvi 850 being recognized by webupdater. I downloaded 4.30 firmware update using this link http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4043 plug the unit in and ran the update. It will ask you to disconnect once it is done. The unit will boot up after a few update progress bars. Plug it back in and launch webupdater.
Enjoy,
Fellow 850 owner.

SOURCE: MY Garmin 405 wont download
I got the same issue and it was because of a software update to ANT+ agent being not compatible with the 405.
here is what I got from Garmin Support.
This solved my problem:
There is currently an issue that has been identified with the latest
version of the ANT agent where it will not transfer data to the computer
from a 405cx. To resolve this please follow these steps
1. If the device has paired it will need to be removed. Right Click on
the ANT agent, select Device Settings then click Remove Device.
2. Right Click the ANT agent and select Exit to close the ANT agent
3. Go to the Control Panel, select Add / Remove Programs and uninstall
the ANT agent.
4. Reboot the computer
5. Download the previous version of the ANT agent from http://www8.garmin.com/software/GarminANTAgent_221.exe
Run this file once it has downloaded
7. Turn on the pairing on the watch ? to do this go to Menu > Settings
> ANT+ > Computer > Pairing (on).
8. Enable pairing on the computer - right click on the ANT agent icon
and select Pair With New Devices > Enabled (this may already be enabled)
The Forerunner and computer should now pair, please be aware that it can
take several minutes for the computer to find the watch.
