Sorry for the last answer. The expert probably didn't understand your question.

If you have purchased the optional backlit keyboard, the right-arrow key will have the backlit keyboard icon on it. The backlit keyboard provides visibility in dark environments by illuminating all symbols on the keys. The settings for this keyboard can be personalized by using
Dell QuickSet.

Backlit Keyboard Brightness Settings – Press <Fn> + right-arrow key to toggle between the three lighting states (in the given order).
The three lighting states are:
a. full keyboard/touch pad brightness
b. half keyboard/touch pad brightness
c. no lighting

Hope this helps. If you need the manual for this computer, it is located here:

Thanks for using FixYa.

Vista has nothing to do with your keyboard, if anything, it would be an installer with dell, or a driver. Make sure you have all the correct software installed from There may also be a way to do it by using the Function(Fn) key plus one of the Function buttons at the top of your it would be : Fn + F3 or something similar.

Wow Kree, you managed to instult me by apologizing for my shotty answer and call me an expert at the same time? You could have just left that part out.

Actually, I did understand it and while I did not go into specifics as you did, the answer WAS in my responce and it was more revealing in general terms than yours was. I answer by giving a broader responce, where it will help more than just one person with their problem.

Some people believe that Windows controls the basic fuctions of your laptop such as adjusting the LCD brightness. This control is on the keyboard via the Fn key plus normally F5/F6(HP) or the arrow keys(dell), sometimes the pgUp pgDown keys, this is not controlled in windows(Yes, I know you can change it in Windows if you have the proper driver and software installed).

If he was still having problems with it, and my responce wasnt specific enough, then I would have done more research and given the details. So how about you leave the opinions out of your responces and stick to the facts.

On the Studio 15 it's Fn-F6. It actually has the lighted keyboard icon on the F6 key.

The backlit keyboard is optional. You can go to and type in your service tag, from there you can get a parts list and see if you have the backlit keyboard. From what I'm finding, if you have the backlight, it will come on when you turn the system on. You can buy a backlit keyboard and swap it out if you must have the light.

When i turn my laptop on it works as normall then i just get this black screen with no icons in theres nothing i can do to fix it please help me

Try pressing FN key (function) and the up arrow on your keyboard. Make sure you are in a dark room and try to see if you can make out anything on the screen. It is possible the backlit on the notebook may be gone. Another option is to connect to an external monitor and see if the same problem occurs. If you are using windows vista your operating system is probably corrupt or possible bad video drivers. Try also booting to safemode by pressing F8 at startup.
