In order to transfer video from the camcorder, the unit has to be on AC power. Once you've set up the power cables and adapter, you can connect the camera to your computer using the USB cable that came with the camera, and then using the camera's interface you can transfer any files you want over to your computer. But it won't work off the battery -- it has to be running on AC power.
Apparently the software that Panasonic sent with my video camera is not compatible with Windows XP Service Pack 3. The solution is spending $79 on another software. Not happy about it, but grateful for your exper that helped me get this resolved. Thanks.
You can't transfer videos through USB. You will need a Firewire 6-pin cord and use it to connect from your MAC to the Camcorder. Only then you can transfer videos.
