Roger,

1st check the voltage going into the Battery Charging Rectifier from the alternator. You should get between 12 Volts DC to 16 Volt DC with the engine running.

If you get these results next check the battery. You should get max 13v dc going to the battery. If your battery is not charging on this unit or gets under 12x dc, you need to replace the battery charging rectifier.

If you need other parts you can find them on this page.

Your battery is dead..If the controller has a visible display your battery charger is most likely OK. Just put in a new Group 26R battery and set the time etc.

Xp8000e wont start. sound like a dead battery, nor will pull start turn engine over.

have you tried removing the spark plug and see if possibly there's a hydro lock from gas or oil in the piston area of the machine, this will remove any pressure off the starter and also pull rope mechanism, then you can visually look into the cylinder and see whats going on,then if this doesn't help then you may have a locked up engine from lack of oil lubrication and the rod bearings in the sump may be bad resulting in the need for a complete rebuild of the engine,if the engine checks out o.k. then you may have a locked up generator head, you may need to split the two components to find out which is locked up

The battery won't start the generator. It has to be hand pulled to start. how do I recharge the battery?

Sometimes it is more expensive to fix the problem with the generator charging system than purchase a small 12v battery charger. I would purchase a 12v small battery charger (5A) that you can keep plugged into your house hold power. This will maintain the battery at full charge so it is ready to start when you need it.

Where can i get a new battery for my generac xp8000e?

Well, check your farm supply/hardware stores... some larger hardware chains may carry this battery and even the auto parts stores, some will carry these smaller batteries. Take down the make and model of the generator, or even better, take the battery along and they can fit you up with an alternative brand that will fit the space and provide the proper voltage to crank the generator.

Good luck!

Generac Model 5525-1 20kw air cooled standby generator Question: How do you access the battery? I think it is behind the front panel, but can't readily see how to open/remove the front panel. Thanks!

2 bolts on top of the front panel. Take them out and then just puul up and it come off. you can then easily remove the battery but make sure the leads dont touch as they still have charger power running through them.

How can the battery charger be changed?

Yes this is a very simple job to do. there are only 2 small bolts holding it in. Make sure the generator is in the off position and removed the 2- 5amp fuses in the transfer switch for N1 and N2 Use a fuse puller designed for this (you can get at home depot or lowes for around $9-$10) not a pair of pliers or screwdriver, etc... there is 240VAC on these fuses.. N1 and N2 are what ultimately feed the transformer in the generator which steps the voltage down to 24-26 VAC and feeds the battery charger. Other than that its fairly simple, let me know if you have any more questions.

Generac 20kw - new battery dead, twice. is there a problem?

if this is a standby unit. there is a charger built into the control box. check the fuses. if it still blows the d\fuse you can install a float type charger available from most auto parts stores. make sure there is power comming in from the bldg breaker box.
