Its nothing wrong with the voice recording, or your phone, voice recordings are simply not allowed to be set as a ringtone,
i have the same phone and it took me many calls and headaches to At&t before they told me that anything set as a ringtone had to be in mp3 format.

I just got an LG Vu, trouble w/ ring tones

Go to 'Options' down in the bottom right corner and select 'Set As'. There, another window should pop up and have the options 'Ringtone' and "Ringtone ID'. Ringtone ID should allow you to set it for a certain contact.
