I have the same problem. I used this fix and it worked perfectly for Super Mario Bros 3. But when I try this on Zelda NES, it does not work. Is there a reason why Mario works but not Zelda? I have a Standard TV with standard cables. It worked fine before I moved back home.

The following fix should help users who do have problems with some virtual console games for the Nintendo Wii that display only a black screen after starting them while the sound remains normal. This does not work in all occasions but should work if you get the Wii menu when you press Home and works only for games that received an update for the interlaced mode.
Try out the following to see if this fixes the issue. Start the game normally until you see the black screen. Connect the Nunchuck to the Wiimote and press Home to see the menu options. Now press A + 2 + Z together which should result in a short “ping-like” sound.
This should have activated the interlaced mode. Leave the menu and you should see the normal game screen and not the black screen anymore. To change the mode again press A + 1 + Z using the same method as above

Go to Wii settings and changed the resolution of the screen to HD and not Standard TV

If you have a HD tv, you must go to Wii settings and change your screen resolution to HDTV. My HDTV worked with the old red white yellow cables, but needed this setting changed when I upgraded to the new component cables.

Wii u games load but get stuck and wont play

HI Denise.

Sometimes a Wii or Wii U is unable to read a disk, or the game will freeze or crash. And sometimes the console won't play any disk at all. Before you throw the disk in the trash or the console out the window, here are a couple of things that might get you back to playing games.13 Jul 2017

My Wii wont play games, plays Wii fit fine but have tried Carnival games and Wii sports but when i tried to load them the screen goes black and then goes to main menu, any ideas????

This should only happen if they are backed up games. But you can mod your wii system at www.wiihdmods.com and get 100 wii games playable from a hard drive for 150.00

I upgraded my wii to 4.0 and installed the homebrew channel.Everything seemed to work great,so I tried to play guitar hero 3 the game shows up in disc channel but when you click start the screen goes black...

You might want to try a Loader instead of the Wii's disc channel. Are you playing original games or backups? You might have broke the Homebrew channel with the 4.0 upgrade. Check out this Wii homebrew set of tutorials to see if it'll help

Nintendo Wii Troubleshooting?

Wii can not tell you, but perhaps Nintendo can. I would call their customer service at 1-800-255-3700. Make sure you write down the ERROR code # (if the Wii gave one).

Wii turns on but has no picture or sound

You could try resetting it by taking out the motherboard battery.

It is on the bottom at the back under a plastic cover.

You may need a tri wing screwdriver to remove the cover.

Try taking this out for a couple of hours and it will reset it.

Hope this helps,

Power is on but screen is black

I found this [temporary] solution at http://www.wiierror.com/wii-black-screen.php:

(via email, thanks Steven) This happened to me once, but I fixed it. Here is how:
Eject the disk
Unplug the wii at the back
Wait 1 minute
Plug it back in
Turn it on from the remote
Press reset if it does not show up
Hold the power button to shut it off
Turn it on once more.
I don't know how, but it seemed to work for me. The problem happened when I was trying to load the Mii channel. Hope this helps !

(via email, thanks Andrew)
The first time I shut down my Wii, the light went orange (as it should). When I turned on the power with my wii remote the next day, the wii\'s light turned green but the screen was black.
The treatment was the same as from Black Screen, No Connection: Unplug the Wii\'s power supply unit, then replug; turn system on with wii remote.
The difference is: this problem can strike in more places than just by loading the Mii Channel. Also, I think the green light being on (yet there being a black screen) is a common symptom as well.

Downloading games

Have you tried doing a cold reboot on the Wii? Hold the power button in for about six seconds until it turns off. The LED on the front should be red. Wait a few seconds then turn it back on.

If this doesn't fix it you probably need to get with Nintendo. Your Wii might have bad memory.

Wii will do everything but it won't play games.....

I had the same problem. No new games would play but the old games played fine. I clicked on the spinning disc icon (where the game should come up) and it prompted me to do an update. I accepted. Once the update was complete (took about a minute or 2) the new games worked fine.
