Compaq laptop cq62 My computer has been partitioned by a friend before sodoesntseem to be original compaq anymore. but what happened i wasnt able to go on line it kept saying DNS issue or something.

when your machine was new it would have come with a diagnostics disk. if you manage to find it power up the machine with the disk in and you can reformat and reinstall the diagnostic partition at the same time. if you don't have the disk anymore, try to borrow a friends computer and download the correct ISO and OS version and use that. Hope this helps.

Yes, you either need an adapter sold at most places like best buy, amazon, newegg, etc. or a changeover cable most likely available at those same places.

Referring back to the photo view, of the Compaq Presario CQ62 series of Notebook PC's DVD burner drive shown, the REAR view shows the connectors for the SATA power cable, and SATA data cable.

The connectors use the same L-shape design, and size that a SATA unit for a desktop computer, would use.

Case design looks to be similar also.

You can do that 2 ways:
1 - if you want to install a Linux distribution then all of them have the option of selecting the install  way in their installer - when presented you must select the Use Free space option and choose to create there a new partition for your Linux. After that all is pretty much automatic.
2 - if you want to install another Windows next to the one you have now you will have to manually create a new partition in the free space using a partition manager program, install the new OS in that partition then manually customize the NTLDR from your original install to take into account the new one.
