None of the buttons work except for the #1 and #4 buttons. The machine will only turn on and off by inserting and removing the key.
So after reading the post from EricLaw, I wanted to clarify his solution because it also worked for me. When you open up the console, you will see the membrane (it actually says membrane inside very small) and the connecting wires to the membrane is actually a wide flat plastic with some stripes embedded in the clear plastic which can be easily detached from the membrane (looks like masking tape w/ stripes). These stripes are how the touch pad on the console talk to the membrane. I then took scissors and cut slits between each stripe (cutting only the clear plastic part of the plastic tape) so that I could leave a strip out of the membrane. I played around leaving different strips out until the right strip was left out. If I recall correctly, I left the 5th strip out and the key pad now works entirely EXCEPT the speed 1 and 4 which were the only keys working until I did this. Hope this helps.
Heck Ya! That was the ticket! It was the 6th wire from the left on my treadmill! Never would have got that fixed in less than 5 minutes without your help! You kick *** and I owe you a BEER!!!
Our problem was that only the iFit button worked, nothing else responded. I opened up the console, and found that when I unplugged the ribbon on the left side (the side with the iFit, program, incline control and stop buttons) all the buttons on the right side worked. So I split the embedded wires on the ribbon and bent them back one by one. The sixth one down was the bad one. It all seems to work now.
OK, Here's a new twist. I had this problem before and this thread fixed it for me. Now the machine is doing it again except this time only 1 & 4 are working. Last time it was 2 & 5 I think. Now I started trying to leave 2 strips out and it seemed to work but when I went to put the console back on it stopped working. Does anyone have any ideas? Does it make sense to leave 2 strips out? Do you think I was on the right track and maybe something moved slightly when I put it back? I can't get it to work again. argh! Thanks for any and all help!
I'm definitely no expert but my only recomendation is to play around with the strips trying different combinations, then seeing what effect it has. Would even recommend writing down the effects to hopefully save you time from repeating steps unnecessarily. The 1 & 4 issue is the main problem everyone is having so if the steps already laid out is not working, make sure to post the resolve here when you figure it out and DON'T GIVE UP!
Just fixed my neighbors treadmill thanks to your post
Just fixed my neighbors treadmill thanks to your post it was quick and free.
I just fixed my wife's ProForm 590 LT by following this. It fixed most of the buttons and it is way better now. Thanks everyone!
Thanks a lot for posting the solution. Our tread mill broke a few years back and it works intermittently. Now I applied the solution and left out 5th wire. As every one mentioned now all buttons except 1 and 4 work, winch I can live with.
Ours was the I fit. Once I unplugged this panel the entire panel worked again. Thank you so much.

After disassembling the console, it’s clear that the problem is there’s a stuck line in the membrane keypad. I wasn’t able to surgically fix that, but I determined which of the 8 control lines was stuck and simply unplugged that one. So, now the 1 and 4 button don’t work at all, but all of the other buttons do—including the increase/decrease buttons, which allow me to easily get to 1 and 4 anyway. That was sorta fun. The ProForm folks aren’t willing to replace/sell me just a membrane keypad—they will only sell a whole new console (>$300). Rats.
Please tell how you determined which of the 8 contol lines was stuck and how you "unplugged" it as the wires appear they would need to be cut, not unplugged. Once I cut a wire, I don't want to make matters worse if it is the wrong one.
The pad attaches to a control panel using a plastic ribbon connector which contains ~8 control lines/wires (which you can see through the clear plastic). I simply cut the clear plastic parallel to the wires so that I could insert the wires into the slot on the board at will. I then plugged in combinations of wires, tried them to see which buttons work, and at which point adding a new wire caused the buttons I cared most about (e.g. /- speed) to stop working. I then left that line unplugged.

My profom 540 just stopped working and only 1 and 4 keys work. Last night, I tried the solution mentioned above and now all the keys work except the 1,4 and 6 keys but I can use the +/- keys to get these speeds. I am going to try to use the iFit function and see if it works. The solution is to remove the back cover, then remove the screws that attach the panel so I can have access to the back of the panel. Then I detach the locking piece of the white connector that receives the ribbon cables, then, remove the ribbon and cut along between the contacts and bend the 5&6th cable, then insert the rest of the ribbon leaving the 5&6th cables out and snap in back the locking piece, put the panel back and insert the key and for some reason everything works, except some of the keys. Then screw back the panel and the back cover and you are all set.
I had to leave the 5th and 6 wire out of the harness and the treadmill works perfect.
How is it that you even unplug clear plastic that is attatched to the membrane?
How does this happen all at once to everyone? I just experienced this #1 and #4 being the only functioning buttons on my Proform 540 for the first time tonight. How exactly to you find the control lines and what is the procedure for "unplugging" the one that is stuck? From what I see, they are all soddered into the main plug housings. Or am I looking in the wrong place?
Wow, It must be a bad part that is going out. I was searching on here for what could possibly be wrong with my treadmill. It does the same thing. Just the #1 and #4 work. I hope I can open it up and fix it like you have suggested. Thanks. I will make sure I contact Proform and let them know that it needs to be fixed for the future people buying this treadmill.
I also have the same exact problem - that is only the 1 and 4 keys work. Sometimes I can push on the membrane above the ifit button and get all the other keys working again for a while but they'll eventually stop working again. Seems like this is a common defect with this treadmill. I'll have to see if if I can use the technique mentioned in this tread to get all the other keys working. I certainly could live without just the 1 and 4 keys.

My proform 540 only turns on and off with the key and works in # 1 and 4, sounds like the same post as Aembrdery in July. any solutions
SOURCE: Pro-Form Sport 1000 treadmill does not stop inclining
Do a Calibration on the treadmill. Take out the safety key. With 2 fingers, hold down the stop button and the speed up or spped plus button. keep holding them down as you insert the safety key, then let go of both.
Press the stop button 1 time, you should see all 0's in the windows, or EP 2P or something weird like that.
Press the Incline up button and then wait. If the incline go up until it stalls then down until it stalls the stops at the bottom, the you are recalibrated, take out the safery key and put it back in to see if all is well. If the incline takes off up again without touching a button, the you have wiring problems or control problems. Call service company to get it repaired.

Hold the upper end of the treadmill with your right hand on the back end of the unit. Using your left hand, pull the lock knob to the left and hold it. Pivot the treadmill down until the frame is past the pin on the lock knob. Note: You may need to push the handrail to the side slightly. 2. Move in front of the back end and hold the treadmill firmly with both hands, and lower the treadmill to the floor. CAUTION: To decrease the possibility of injury, bend your legs and keep your back straight

My problem is that only the ifit button and the decrease in speed button work, nothing else. I've tried cutting through the piece of clear plastic with 8 wires as instructed and fidgeted with them but nothing has worked. help please?
Hi Bianca,
I had the exact same problem you have. I changed out the control board in under the motor hood and it didn't help. $150.00 wasted on an unneeded part. Then after reading it might be the batteries I took the whole back off my treadmill console panel. No batteries. Then after reading the ribbon fixes in this thread I pressed the latch release on the large ribbon , took the ribbon out and put it back in just as it had been. no alterations to it. Now my treadmill, Proform 540s, is working like new again. Don't know how long it will work but I'm happy for now.
