Is this console shift or column shift? If column shift, I'd have to look under the hood or under the vehicle at the shift linkages to see if the linkages are moving? Is this fwd or rwd, I haven't looked up any info on your vehicle?
If column shift and the shift linkages don't move, the shifter in the column may be broken, if that is the case, I swap out the steering column for one with a good shifter.
I don't know your model year? If the ignition switch is on the steering column, I don't know if it might effect your security system, where applicable? You might be swapping one problem for another, hope not? Something to think about.
Hi Charles:
I'd be thinking that the linkage may be disconnected.
Work Safe!! Block the tires so it can't roll. Slide under and look at the transmission and the shift linkages. Have a helper move the gearshift lever and see what moves and try to figure out if there is a rod that is not connected to a shift lever.
Do you feel detent positions as you move the shifter? If it gives little resistance or lacks detents, your shift linkage has come undone (simple fix).
If you feel detent positions but the transmission does not engage, your transmission has failed. Check the fluid... you'll know.
car is in two gears disengauge linkage and put back in Mistral if is a too loader you may have to pull the shift assembly and manually shift thhe gears your shift forks may be bent
Sounds to me that the shifter broke, i believe the shifter has a ball end that slips into a pocket in trans. that moves for gear selection and that ball brook off end of shifter. if its got a linkage set up most likely samething either shifting arms came off or shifter broke where linkage rods connect.
Do you mean that the shifter moves normally, and no gear engages, or the shifter won't go into the 5th gear position? If the shifter won't go there, its probably a mis-adjusted linkage. If it will go there, but you don't "feel" it go into gear, it could be that the ball and socket linkage rod for 5th gear has popped loose(this is common on higher mileage VWs with worn shifter parts) I recommend an entire shift bushing set be installed and then the proper adjustments can be made... Hope this helps...;-)
