We brought it in off the curb hoping for a fridge. Is the 1 setting fridge appropriate on the lower shelves, for canned sodas, etc?

I have a General Freezer,Ltd model 16 Upright and it shuts itself off periodically without my being aware . When I see food defrosting , I am able to restart the unit by tapping on the temp control dial...

You need to replace the temperature control, (unless you find a bad wire connection to the temp control first). You can find a control that is close enough at any appliance parts store, bring the old one in for a match up. Make sure it is NOT a 39 degree constant cut in type and you will want a differential of at least 6 or 8 degrees minimum so that it wont "short cycle" which means it would run for a few minutes, shut off for a few then run again before the high side pressure comes down.

Temperature control are the lower numbers colderr or warmer?

Hi there, the higher the number the colder the fridge, unless the numbers are in degrees. If it's numbered 1-6, 6 is the coldest. -Alex

I need to know what the numbers mean on the temperature setting (1-7) for my Gibson Upright Freezer? What is best recommended temperature?

The highest number is the coldest setting. When you fill it up with food to freeze , set the freezer to the coldest and after everything is frozen .set the control to the middle.
