This can be caused by several things such as an oxidized video drum, a failed component in the tape detection circuit or a transmission gear not engaging properly. All of which can be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired by a qualified service technician.

If you can't find the manual on Canon's website it's probably not a good idea to go elsewhere. Your best bet is to send it in to Canon and have their techs repair it.

I have found that the problem you are having is a result from a bad lcd cable that goes from the lcd pcb to the main pcb or a bad lcd panel itself. I hope this helps.

It could possibly be because after selecting the "disp." (display) button several times the screen goes black. Simply press the "disp" button until you monitor will show what your camera see's.

Take the camera to a reputable camera shop, there is honestly no way to do this at home, if you touch the video heads by accident, or accidently move something, it could spell big trouble. Also I to have an XL2, and canon might be willing to fix this for free from what I understand about their customer care plan (Best Regards)

This commonly happens when the ohm load is too low. Double-check the wiring to confirm that the speakers are wired properly.
