Can't Connect to Internet

I recently changed my phone over to comcast. My Main computer is online but I have an old laptop (Sony VIAO with Windows ME) that will no longer connect. I use is enough and would like to continue. They told me the IP number might need changed but I do not know how to apply that.

sorry, most of this doesn't seem to apply to the sony viao using Windows ME. Of course it just might be the dummy trying it also. lol

I tried to run the cmd on the computer and it wouldn't let me.

Keyboard and mouse not working on Sony viao with Windows 8

Did your computer come with windows 8 or did you upgrade to windows 8. If you upgraded, you will find that many of your old drivers will not work with windows 8. You can connect to the internet and check for updated drivers. I upgaraded and had to completly replace my wireless card because the old one was not compatible with windows 8. You can also make sure that everything is pluged in and restart your computer just in case your devices have not been discovered by your system.

I HAVE A NEW HP DESKTOP AND AN OLD LINKSSY WIRELESS G

Hi Vivian,

Chweck you cables and where they are conencted.

You will need to make sure that the Comcast modem is providing internet, you can do this by connecting your laptop to it using ethernet directly if it connects to the internet, that will be a good thing.

From your comcast Modem, the ethernet Cable should go to the linksys where it says "WAN". this should give you an internet connection and make your comcast modem communicate with your linksys Router.

I have a Zonet Router that I am hooking up to Comcast DSL internet. i show that i am connected but i can not get online. i duplicated the MAC address i just dont know what else can be wrong. is there a...

The first thing is that Comcast is Not a DSL connection it is Cable connection. Now first make sure that your computer will be able to go on line when connected directly to the modem. Connect your main computer directly to the comcast modem and check if that goes on line. If not then you will need to contact Comcast and get main computer on line. If it is online then reset your router for 30 seconds. release the reset and wait for 1 minute. Now connect the main computer to the router and comcast modem to the router. open the set up page and Clone the MAC address of the " Main " computer.
power cycle the modem and the router. See if it works.

Says connected, but won't connect

Can connect to local but not Internet?
This is most likely due to a driver issue other than a settings issue. First off, if you are running your computer in selective startup, change it back to normal startup and reboot. If this clears the problem then great, you can go back to selective startup but be careful as to what services you shut down.
The easiest way to check if this is a driver issue is to update the driver for the device. This can be done at the Device Manager found in the control panel, (In XP, the device manager is in the “system” icon and under the hardware tab). Scroll down to the network adapters and click on the + sign. Double click on the adapter and choose to update driver, let it search the internet (windows update) if it wants to, if it finds an updated driver, allow it to install. If it does not find an updated driver, then maybe the driver you have is a recent one but it may be corrupt. If that is the case, then it would be better to right click on the adapter and choose uninstall, this will force windows to reinstall the device the next time it reboots, and again it will ask to search online for a fresh driver, choose yes and let it run. Once the device installs, try to connect to the internet.

Won't Start Up

See if you can go into Safe Mode by hitting F8 during startup. If so then try "Last Known Configuration" choice on the Safe Mode Menu. If that doesn't work then let me know, have a few more things to try..

A router is basically a mini-computer that splits up one internet connections to 4 (or whatever # of ports you have).

Basic Connections to a router:
A Router requires a internet connections, so your broadband modem must connect to the WAN port (theres only one) of the router DIRECTLY. Then Ethernet cables go from the router to the computers on the LAN ports. Don't do something weird like connecting your internet to your computer then your computer to the routers WAN port, it'll most likely mess up.

Once you have connected your router like this, it should work.

If your modem only has a usb port, I have no idea how to make that work out. Sorry. Try getting a new modem from your ISP, or check if your modem does have a ethernet port, if it does just connnect that to the routers wan port.

Also computers should not interconnect with each other with use of a router. Thats what the router is for. Everything gets connected and split up at the router, nothing connects to anything else but the router, basically.

Cannot connect to the internet

Are you running the setup disc provided by comcast to get your email setup?

If you are , you do not really need that disc as it provides useless and often outdated junk on the disc. You should be able to surf the internet by plugging in your Ethernet Cord into the laptop with no problem.

On the issue of the Comcast user name and password, this was originally used at the original configuration of the modem when it is wallgardened.

You can always call Comcast and have then activate the modem for you. You'll need the Mac address at the bottom of your modem to activate it over the phone.

Online Activation usually requires your customer account number. But since it looks like you do not have this data, you will need to call them directly.

Won't connect online

This just happened to my siste and a frind of mine recently. It can be a few things.

Are you connecting via wire from your laptop or wireless? I'm hoping they did not remove a wireless router and not explain this to you.

With a new modem your main IP address would change. First I would try turning off everything, unplug the modem and any connected switches or routers. Wait at least 10 minutes, better yet, unplug them and go to work, go shopping etc.. Then plug the modem back in, wait 2-5 minutes, plug in any routers and switches, wait 1 minute then turn the laptop back on. See if that solves the problem.
