The only knowledge I have been able to find seems to indicate it should be a 9 volt unit and it needs to be hard wired in . But I can find no confirmation of the voltage or where the hard wire needs to be done.

You should check your battery-it must be putting out at least 6 volts to get the computer started up-depending on the era there will be a battery near the bottom frame-you will need to remove on of the side covers to reach it-

Every time I have gotten this message, I have had to replace the motor controller.

If this unit has not been used for that period of time then the 6v batt has died ans needs replacing call National Gym Parts @ 1-800-496-7278 to order part# LC001.5
HERE IS THE PROCEDURE TO REPLACE THE BATT:
Tilt the bike on its side, remove mounting screws securing the battery to the bracket. Remove the battery just enough to access and disconnect the black (neg) wire from the (-) terminal and the red (pos) wire form the (+) terminal. Replace battery and reverse procedure when installing battery
