Have to choke MTD to keep it running

I have a MTD 13AI67HO62 ridding mower with a B&S 20HP motor. runs good at start, but after 15 to 20 the engine starts to sputter. adding a little choke seems to fix the sputter for about 5 min, then I must add a little more choke every few minutes until I am at full choke and the engine dies.with a loud backfire in the exahust

Check fuel pump diaphram is not streched or hard, check fuel filter for blockage, or fuel tank cap might be not venting, if none work drain and clean out carby bowl.

My riding mower starts and runs except I have to keep playing with the choke to keep it running. would that be a carburator problem or filter problem?

Check to make sure you Filter is clean. Hold up to direct sunlight to see if you can see through it. If it's clean then your carb either needs to be cleaned (might get lucky and spray carb cleaner in it) or completely rebuilt (doubtful).

Good luck!

I have a craftsman 20hp Briggs motor, it turns over but wont start.

Make sure it is choking the engine like it should. If it is not choked it wont start for several minutes.

I have trouble initially starting my MTD Yardbug mower. Once going, the engine runs great, but it seems like when the throttle lever is set to choke, it doesn't actually choke. I usually have to either...

Sounds like your throttle cable is out of adjustment (i.e. when you put the carb in choke position is doesn't actually go into choke).

MOWER RUNS FIVE MINUTES THEN STOP AFTER IT WARMS UP

Check your automatic choke ... a cold mower needs more choke, and the auto-choke should release when the motor warms and runs smoothly. If the choke is sticking, the motor will die when it gets warmed up, then start again after it cools down.
