We lost a cordless phone that's on so the other phones on the line say the line is in use. If the battery dies, will the line be free again?

Quite probably it's the battery. Open it, get the specification for battery and buy a new one. Be careful, there are many very similar batteries but connection to phone is different.

I was unable to locate a manual for your phone online, but can offer some suggestions to solve your problem.

Most cordless phones beep in battery low, out of range, and other situations. Since it is also displaying the "Searching" message, it indicates that it lost its link with the base due to being brought too far from it or the battery power has fallen to low to permit use as far as it may have worked before.

The quick fix is to simply place the phone into the base / charger. This re-establishes a security link between the cordless handset and your telephone line. This is a safeguard that is used to prevent others with the same cordless phone from merely getting "near your base / charger" and gaining access to your dial tone to place calls on your phone line.

If the battery is low, it should left to remain on the base / charger long enough to fully charge the battery. If the battery fails to charge, there may be an issue with the base / charger; but it is much more likely to be a problem with a battery that has reached the end of its useful life (batteries seldom last more than a couple of years and may not last a single year depending on usage). Either condition will require replacement of the faulty device before using again.

This phone unit it is a cordless phone hand set unit phone,it is a home land line base phone wright?Yes? Did u tries ring high ring low on the phone hand set functions up and down of the phone itself have a ring functions so u make sure is it not the phone unit functions itself.Did u try other phone unit on that phone land line to make sure it is not the land line phone line problems.U can tries take the corless hand set nocking it on a hard surface lightly a couples times.This could clean some dust and dirt loosen or stuck function buttons.The cordless phone hand set battery it is charging?Yes? Phone might have a weak or dying or a dead litium battery.Tries the phone unit itself unplug/replug it back like about and hour later for phone unit to reboot itself.

Some Panasonic cordless phones come with up to five handsets each will need to be properly adjusted. You may need to set the main handset to synchronize with the base unit plugged into the telephone wall jack and assign special configuration numbers to the other handsets in order to properly identify each one within a specified location. One handset left in the turned on mode may make it impossible to place calls with the any of the other handsets. if you have had it a while chances r the batterys have had it even though they show full, try a new set, or even try standard batterys briefly while fone is not in charging mode to see if they work during a call.

I suggest you contact Panasonic on line at panasonic.com or call their toll free service line. You can always remove the battery from the phone and make sure the phone is "dead", then reinstall the battery to see if the memory for the dial lock has gone back to the factory setting.

I think its probably your only choice, NIMH batteries are known to have a very short shelf life if not regular charged / discharged you can get GE cordless batteries here - GE Cordless battery

Maybe, RF amplifier chip die or antenna broken.
