It depends on the job and some people like to look right very long ones. However I find that it is best to keep your cover letter short sweet and to the point.
Say something like:
Greetings, My name is blah blah. I am applying for the position of blah blah blah... Please find enclosed/attached my resume. I think my skills would be a great fit for this particular position and I would love to put my knowledge and experience to work for your company. I can be reached at 999-999-999, please feel free to contact me with any questions or if you need any additional information.

In your email, highlight the entire cover letter and press CTRL+C to copy it to the clipboard. Then open your word processor, and on an empty document place the cursor in an empty spot and press CTRL+V to paste the cover letter.
