Cannot format the external hard drive !
SOURCE: Western Digital Passport 160 external drive hangs system
My first suggestion is to try plugging the drive to one of the USB ports on the notebook and not to the ones on the card. Otherwise, try the drive on another computer to see if it's the drive. Then my next suggestion would be to try your USB card in someone else's notebook.

Did you install the drivers for the drive? Is it recognised in Windows as a device? If not, try reconnecting and Windows should prompt you to install the drivers, Assuming the drive is recognised by WIndows, then are a few causes for not transferring data. I've attached a link to Western Digital's FAQ regarding Data Transfer problems with your drive....

Several page of possible solutions are listed above.... however, you can refine the search if it is only happening when running specific apps or @ specific times. The answer you seek is located in this link. If you can provide more details on the type of file(s) you are trying to transfer and how, I'll refine the solution for you....

Formatting will make all of your files unavailable. It is possible to get to the files in some cases even if the drive is acting up, but it is not something for a beginner if your files are precious or valuable. Odds are good a pro can recover them for you, but don't use the drive anymore until someone looks at it.

1. 'Take no Action' option is OK!
2. Try to connect again the data cable to passport HDD and check whether the driver for passport is installed properly!
