These instructions are for a Sony Cineza VPL HS3, but may be the same for the HS3.
1st thing to check - is the cover properly/completely closed - this can stop the projector from working.
Connect the power and set the projector to standby mode.
Press these buttons on the remote control in this order, for less than 5 seconds each.
Reset - Left Arrow - Right Arrow - Enter

This is required, to reset the lamp timer.

Also, something I found interesting from the internet - lamp life isn't when the bulb dies, but when a bulb has lost 10% of its brightness - so you might well be able to reset the timer and get much more use from the bulb - the image just wont be as bright.

I have a Sony VPL-CX61 Multimedia Projector. I just changed the lamp and I cannot get the "please replace lamp" message to go off.

When you use a projector it automatically keeps a timer of how long the lamp has been used for. The message that comes up on screen saying "please replace the lamp" comes up not because it's some how sensing that the lamp is getting old, but because the lamp hours gets to a certain number (usually up around 1500 hours). Because of this when you replace the lamp you need to reset the lamp hours counter, or the projector doesn't even know you've changed it. Every projector does it this way, and they all do it a different way, I googled the model you gave us and found this set of instructions on how to do it, so give it a go.

Reset the lamp counter hours of operation for the projector SONY VPL-CX61
Using the remote commander while the unit is powered up, press "ENTER", "ENTER", "LEFT"
and "ENTER" in sequence. A prompt will appear on the screen asking if you wish to enter the factory mode.
Press the "UP" key on the remote and the unit is now in service mode. This sequence will add two new groups
to the customer setup menu. Press the "MENU" button to view.
Whenever the lamp is replaced, the lamp timer should be reset. With the unit in the "factory" mode, press
"RESET", "LEFT", "RIGHT" and "ENTER" on the remote commander. Verify the lamp hours have been reset to
zero in the service menu.

Hope this worked for you,

Sony cineza vpl hs51 projector won't project

Something I found interesting from the internet - lamp life isn't when the bulb dies, but when a bulb has lost 10% of its brightness - so you might well be able to reset the timer and get much more use from the bulb - the image just wont be as bright.

The lamp may not have been changed - just the timer reset - How many hours has the lamp really done - 1000, 3000, 5000?
If you know that the hours are genuine, then was the quartz bulb contaminated with a touch of oil from skin contact?
This will substantially shorten lamp life, due to the quartz going milky and opaque.
The easiest way to check, is to pull the lamp and have a look at the bulb.

If need be replace the lamp and reset the lamp timer.

Blue Haze on screen Sony cineza vpl-hs50 projector

I also have the same problem -- the fix is to replace the optical block ( Internal lamp engine ) which is a $1,100 part. I just purchased a used projector for half the price of the part.

VPL-HS20 issues...who's got the right answers!

I know this post is 3yrs old, but wanted to add a couple things. I have the VPL-HS20, you can take the filter out and blow it out with air can duster every so often. I bought a new one and they are over $30.00.. Also buy the correct bulb LMP-H180 3000hrs if you replace it. You can clean the front lens protector, Remove slide tab, hold top and bottom of lens cover assembly and give a firm 1/4 twist clockwise, then pull out. You can clean it with glass cleaner cloth.
