Yes, you should back up all your Documents and pictures, and all your programs.
I would also recomend you (before you upgrade) you download and install DriverMax (http://hollyecho.com/drivermax.htm) - this will create an archive of all your device drivers - Then put these drivers on a CD or Flash Drive (that way you will not have to hunt for all the drivers for your computer - XP Home and XP Pro uses the same drivers.
Since you are re-installing the operating system anyway - do a secure wipe on your drive, that way any virus you know will be completely gone.
Then just insert your New WinXP pro cd and follow the promts!

Instead of upgrading, do a full installation of XP. You will be prompted to either keep your old system or remove it. Choose to remove it. That will solve your problem. Don't forget to rate this answer

chipset drivers that are loaded onto the harddrive are not the same as the ones in the "new" computer you put it into.
The only way to do that is format the drive and start from vanilla.
This is very common. -Jeff

Hi,
Try booting the machine up in safe mode. To do this restart the machine and repeatedly tap F8. When the sub menu appears choose safe mode as see if you get the same message again. If you don't and it boots to safe mode let me know asap and i'll take you through certains steps to recover the operating system.
