Hard starting craftsman riding 24 hp mower

Have to crank for a long time before engine seems to get enough fuel to start. Could fuel be bleeding out of the carb after sitting? I move the throttle lever all the way up to full choke and then all the way down and then all the way back up to full choke seceral times before engine will turn over. Otherwise, the throttle lever is always held up on full choke while trying to start engine. Clear fuel filter has virtually no fuel in it when and while I am trying to start engine.

If your fuel filter has no fuel perhaps you have a leak or loose gas fitting . try tighten all gas fittings from gas tank to carb.
If the gas tank is higher then the engine then it may be gravity fed (no fuel pump). If you do have a fuel pump the make sure it's in working order. Make sure there's no blockage in your fuel line.

Testimonial: "Thank you Dale. After I removed the riding mower hood to have better access to the 24 Horsepower engine, I pulled the upper motor cover off and proceeded to check for any and all things that could be restricting fuel from getting to the carburetor. Not seeing anything obvious, I started to put the upper motor cover back and noticed that the throttle/choke cable had shifted at the attachment in front of the engine. Because the cable had shifted forward almost 2 inches, the rotating attachment where the cable connects never forced the butterfly vane to rotate in the carburator to choke the engine . . . even when the theottle/choke cable actuator was pushed all the up. In other words for a number of years, I was never choking the engine when I was trying to start it with the throttle/choke lever pushed all the way up to the "Choke" position. After I readjusted the relative position of the theottle/choke cable at its attaching bracket, I waited until the next morning to start the mower engine. After a very brief crank the engine started right up. I knew then that the starting problem had been solved and corrected. As I think about it, I should have realized something was wrong with the choking mechanism, when the engine ran fine in the fully choked position. After I adjusted the cable position, the engine sputters and runs rough when the throttle/choke actuator is pushed up in the Choke position. As soon as I pull the actuator back to the Fast position, the engine smooths right out. Thank you for this very valuable "fixya" website and for making it such a valuable interactive resource. Craftsman 48 inch 24 hp engine starts with choke, but stalls when choke is released

Carburetor is clogged and dirty. I'd also drain the fuel from the tank and look for debris or water in it.

My 19.5 hp briggs and stratton engine is geting fuel and spark and the starter seems to act right but it does bind at times i have rotated the engine by hand and it does get pretty hard to turn in

try and jump start it with your car to see if the battery is weak if still struggle to crank try and jump direct to the starter motor if struggles direct to the starter then the starter appears to be bad

My engine turns but does not start i am getting spark at the plugs i dont think there is enough fuel being pumped in

Try getting a can off carb cleaner or brake cleaner and give it a good spray in the throttle/carb this will likely do the trick.

Craftsman 24 HP 42" mower...has always been hard

If it has the Briggs or Kohler engine, it has a built in compression release. If the release isn't working properly, it will be hard to start. It mimics a weak battery. One remedy to enable the compression release to work properly is to adjust the valves. They need to be adjusted periodically. Briggs has all the valve clearances for all their engines in an easy-to-use chart. I will give you valve service instructions and then the engine chart with all the valve clearances.

24 hp Briggs Stratton sears riding mower engine wont start unless you use start fluid cleaned filter have flow to engine

If the mower starts and continues to run after injecting, you may want to make sure the choke is working properly. If the choke plate is not closing all the way, it will make cold starts difficult.

Mower backfires and loss of power

i would also check fuel flow. pull the gas line from the carb and see if gas flows out at a good rate (into a metal can of course) or if it trickles out. if the latter, then gas tank either has junk at the bottom preventing the gas from flowing or the vent hole (usually on the gas cap) is plugged.

i have also had my carb float bowl rust out on me, but that took 10 years.
