2003 XKR dashboard illumination goes off when main lights switched on or if dash lights do stay on after starting they go off when main beam is operated.

Hi, wonder if you could help a bemused jec member! When using my 2003 XKR on a night, since last Friday something weird is happening with the dashboard illumination. When first switching on, with lights on auto, dashboard illuminates and if car is started immediately will stay on. Else if you wait for check sequence sometimes dash illumination comes back on with starting and sometimes goes off. Manually going through off(illumination on), side, main and auto may result in dash lights failing either when moving to side or full lighting. When illumination goes off at the side lights setting stage then side lights also fail to come on, headlamps always work ok. If you manage to get illumination working with lights on, the illumination of the dash usually fails if main beam is used, pretty sure this also happens sometimes if brake lights are used or you go over a larger than average bump in the road. Any ideas, is it just a loose connector? Any help or pointers would be most appreciated.

Is this car the all alluminium xk model ? if so it sounds like a bad earth the earth studs are all bonded to the body and are prone to detatching from the body and causing all strange probs. the favorite ones are both front behind the wheel arch liners, if its the older xk still sounds like a bad earth poss behind the headlamps. the only other probs i had was wires coming detatched/poor connection from the column switch, hope this helps

2004 f350 6.0 liter Installing new Control Panelfor air spring/shocks. Needto tie into dashboard illumination circuit. what color is the dashboard illumination circuit wire? where would I find it?

The brown wire at the main light switch is what feeds power to the microprocessor in the main light switch and the exterior lights circuit. The microprocessor delivers power to the interior instrument and dash lights on the light blue with red wire again at the main lights switch. This circuit is dimable so if you need 12 volts all the time this may not be the right circuit to use.

On light stays on

try removing the fuse for the dash illumination as there are different circuits to the dash , if light goes out then remove the dash and check the circuitry for any signs of corrosion, rust etc bearing in mind this is a soldered pcb , if light stays on it is from the side lights/main light circuit which i would start by making sure the light switch is turning off completely for this you will need a voltmeter or 12volt test light good luck and keep me updated if you wish

Fluid resevoir light in dash stays on all the time

The headlamp circuit is rather simple. From the 15 amp RH headlamp fuse, there is a red w/yellow trace that goes to the RH high beam. Out of the 15 amp LH headlamp fuse, the wire going to the LH Hi beam is solid red. Both of these wires should have power when the headlamp relay is energized. The wires from the Hi Beam bulbs going back to the switch should both be red w/black trace. The wire going from the headlamp relay to power the 2 15 amp fuses is white. The headlamp switch applies a ground to illuminate either the Lo Beams or the Hi Beams.

Headlights don't work why?

Test the headlight switch as follows.
  • Move your car to a dark area, such as waiting until night or moving to a dark garage, to test your headlight switch.
  • 2Turn on your car, so you can see your dashboard lights. Note whether some of your dashboard lights fail to illuminate.

    • 3
  • Turn on your car's headlights. Note whether your car's headlights illuminate.
  • 4Press the high beam lever to activate your high beams. Note whether your high beams activate.
  • 5Put your car in "Park." Move to the back of the car. Note whether your parking lights are illuminated.
  • 6View any remaining driving lights, such as lights above the license plate. Note whether these lights come on.
If more than one set of lights does not activate when you turn on the lights, you may need to replace your headlight switch. If only one set of lights does not turn on, try replacing the lightbulbs in that set and then retesting your car. If the lights still do not illuminate, you may need to replace your headlight switch.
