I have a 7kw Kohler marine generator that shuts of when boat gets up on plane New impeller New fuel filter I started it runs for a while then shuts off It takes a bit to start but runs for 20 plus hrs

Well the above logic is good , but I saw something else in your text that makes me think its a fuel delivery problem , you said above "takes a bit to get it restarted" if it was a low flow switch or circuit , it start right back up ! but if its a vapor lock or fuel starvation problem then yep it be a bit tricky to restart it !! (air in fuel) ive seen this happen on mid to large boats (diesel) seems there was a small air leak (crumpled gasket) around there fuel filters and it worked ok till engine heated up to normal temp !! then it lost fuel prime from the day tank and it be difficult to reprime it till engine cooled back down (head scratcher I know all too well) , mfg know this can happen on mobil power units so lots use a small tank (less 3 gal) between the filters and injector pumps it adds a bit of "time" in there if fuel looses its prime for a moment (rolls and swells ) so pwr unit keeps going

I take it that this unit runs the power on board and is permanently fixed in the boat
you mention new impeller so logically that means that it is water cooled drawing the cooling water from outside (underneath the boat)
pursuing logic further if that is the case then there is a shut down circuit for the water flow to prevent overheating should the water inlet become blocked ( weeds, plastic cloth etc)
from your question and statement I would be looking in that area to make sure water flow is not restricted or the protection circuit is operational ( no corrosion in terminals and wires )

Older motors have two jets in the carb. A high and low speed jet. My guess is the high speed jet is clogged, and motor is trying to run on low speed jet.

The governor and / control maybe your issue. Also if you have the electronic governor model, check the speed sensor screwed in near the fly wheel, it should have approx 2VAC on it during crank.

sounds more like a fuel problem not oil being spilled on it but check the oil level some have a low oil shut off see if you can keep it running spraying carb cleaner in the air filter that will tell you if it is a fuel problem more so a fuel problem if you left fuel in it for more than 30 days

Kohler marine generator troubleshooting


I have a kohler marine generator that shuts down when it reaches operating temp of 200/210 degrees. It runs for about 5 minutes. Already replaced impella and have sea water pumping through, coolant level is good. Any suggestions? Thanks

You did not say what fuel you running the motor on??? It sounds like it may be LPG or Propane.... is so then it seems as though you do not have enough surface for evaporation...

1975, 7.5 Kohler marine genset, runs only with the reset depresed


Can't search for a manual without model, type, serial, etc numbers...

A few things to take a look at:

1) Oil level / pressure sending unit. This is normally bypassed as long as the start switch is pressed. When engine starts, and switch is released, engine will die if sending unit is defective, or you are low on oil.

2) Exhaust temperature sensors. Older units were notorious for burning these up.

3) Cooling Water Temperature sensor. These cause trouble often, but mostly due to water pump impeller being eaten away by galvanic action and not able to pump water as effecively. End result is water temp higher than normal, which trips the switch, which kills the engine.

4) Alternator (generator) output not as it should. If output doesn't rise to proper level within a few seconds of engine start, the engine will be shut down.

5) Choke not working as it should

6) Bad fuel, bad fuel pump, clogged fuel filter.
