Have tried all cleaning, fitted new Hp black cartridge, removed head and cleaned with wet towels, still will not print any black, I have now tried an old empty black cartridge part filled with Iso propyl alcohol still no black print, something strange here , is some software stopping black printing ?
SOURCE: installed a brand new cartridge in hp 1040 fax but prints very poorly(light )
remove the new cartridge
TAKE A MICROFIBER CLOTH MOISTENED WITH RUBBING ALCOHOL AND WIPE THE PRINT HEAD ( THE PART OF THE CARTRIDGE THAT CONTACTS PAPER)
REINSTALL THE CARTRIDGE THEN TEST
ALSO YOU MAY WANT TO WIPE OFF THE CONTACTS ON THE BACK OF THE INK CARTRIDE WITH THE MICROFIBER CLOTH MAKING SURE THERE ARE NO FINGERPRINTS ON THE CONTACTS

If the ink has dried up in the nozzles try putting a wet cloth in the microwave to get it hot enough to produce a little steam and set the cartridge, nozzles down on the damp cloth until ink starts to ooze from the cartridge. May require a couple of tries. Try using the cleaning program again.
Be careful not to touch the copper contacts on the cartridges.

I have a HP Business Inkjet 1220 Printer, and the block ink cartridge light is flashing. I replaced the cartridge with a brand new one, closed the door, and black ink light is still flashing. I put in another neew black ink cartridge, closed the door, and same issue- black cartidge ink light flashing. I cannot print- what to do?

Still sounds like a bad ink cartridge, try cleaning the bottom of the cartridge with a Kleenex and soapy water. Dry it off real good.
Look where the cartridge sits and clean the same way.
Ink jets are dead technology.
SOURCE: My HP 640 will not print. Ran the test, no print.
If these are new cartridges, make sure you removed all of the protective plastic wrap that comes when packaged. usually its red , yellow or orange plastic tab that should be removed.
If these are not new cartridges, you may need to try another set.
Try running the head cleaning utility under the printer utilities options
HP is very good at having this utility available to trouble shoot most common problems. If you don't have this utility, try updating your printer driver. (basically uninstall the printer and download the driver from the HP website, and reinstall the printer using the latest driver).
Hope this helps..
