Most likely scenario is the grease on the turntable bearings has dried up into a paste like substance. If you remove the turntable and clean up the old grease, oil up the bearings and apply new grease, chances are (9 times outs 10) it'll be fine.
However, the drag caused by the semi-fuzed turntable bearings may have damaged the belt or drive wheel, depending on what type of machine you have (Belt or direct drive) You should inspect these parts while you have the turntable platter off the unit.
More info needed - could be that the 'belt' driving the turntable has slipped or broke - what type of player is this?
