My Canon PowerShot A 1100IS will not turn on

My Canon PowerShot A1100 will not turn on. I have put in new batteries, but will not turn on.

  • Charlie A Oct 03, 2016

What else can I say? I push the on button and nothing happens. I use re-chargeable batteries and made sure they were charged, even put in another set, just to be sure they were good. Looking into where the batteries go, looks OK. I called Canon & they say they no longer repair this camera. I can't find a replacement camera this size with a view finder and I can't see what I want to take a picture of without it when in full sun. So, I am just out of luck.

Hi Charlie,
Please provide additional info if you really want help in this site. Questions with sufficient information do get answered sooner than others so consider that. Otherwise, check answers to previous questions of similar nature and you might locate a suitable solution for your question.

Testimonial: "what else can I say? I push the button and it won't turn on. I have rechargeable batteries in it and have made sure they are charged. I have looked into where they go & looks OK, nice and shiny contacts, I don't know what else I can say. I called Canon about it and they no longer repair this camera. I have looked for a replacement, but none of the small camera's have a viewfinder and I cannot see what I want to photograph without one. So I am just out of luck."

Hi Charlie, Thanks for the testimonial. I did a bit of search on the model of your camera and I realize many other people that own that model had experienced similar problem - camera failed to switch-on. This is probably an issue of design flaw but only Canon can verify.

Things to check first for a camera that won't turn on are battery contact points, and micro switches that are located on the battery and memory card doors. Troubleshooting tips on other things that need to be checked may be seen here. These tips won't work for every case, but they're worth a try.

I had the same problem. Here's the solution. Go into menu settings, then over to tools, select reset all at the bottom of options list. You may have to re-enter the date and time. This solved the low battery problem for me. I hope this helps.

I have a Canon powershot A1100is dig camera. When I try to turn it on, it reads need new batteries. even if I change the batteries. Sometimes it wont even turn on. Help

Do you using Ni-MH batteries? Canon cameras judge the battery is low power by the real-time voltage of the batteries. And the voltage of Ni-MH batteries are lower than Li-ion ones, so the camera will notice low power even there are new batteries. Try Li-ion ones and see is anything help. best wishes!!

There exists a good, if not better alternative way to download your photos. Please don't take the following as a sales pitch as it's not, but please see this linked blog article, as it describes the use of an inexpensive card reader as a much easier, faster, and less error prone way to download your photos. In fact there are several important reasons discussed in the article for using a card reader vice downloading from the camera. USB Card readers are also very inexpensive these day, with cost virtually not an issue.
