Dell Inspiron E1405 Keyboard and touchpad stop responding when bootup gets to Windows password screen. Any ideas as to why? Thanks in advance.

o to better explain the problem when I power up the laptop the normal routine starts BUT when it gets to the password input screen for Windows, the keyboard and touchpad are non-responsive. I tried a wirelss mouse and it works BUT I'm still unable to type in the password. This occurs in any mode I start Windows in (i.e. safemode, safemode with networking, etc.).

The NUM lock light is lit but pressing NUM lock does not deactivate it. I am able to move the cursor on screen via the touchpad but as soon as it gets to the Windows pass screen and press a key BOTH the board and the pad are null.

Could be a problem with drivers. Try to start windows in safemode. To start in safemode keep pressing F8 imediattly after the laptops starts and will show up a screen, choose safe mode. If in safemode works use system resotre and restore to an earlier time when worked.

Unlock keyboard

James,
You will need to either reinstall Windows or you can search the internet for password recovery software. There is usually a fee on some of these sites. Dell does not have any generic passwords to help you get back into Windows.

I have Windows 7 on a Dell Inspiron lap top. My

Update the driver for your Keyboard/Touchpad. Got to Dell's Download Page. Enter your Service Tag, underneath your laptop, to get the correct list of drivers for the corresponding model of your laptop. Make sure to select the correct operating system. The touchpad drivers are located in the Input Device Drivers section, listed as Dell Touchpad / Pointing Stick, Alps - Driver or Synaptics - Driver.

After installation, go to the Windows 7 Start or Orb then in the
type main.cpl, click main.cpl in the list of programs.

1. Click the Dell Touchpad tab.
2. Click Touchpad Settings.
3. Make sure there is a check in the box to the left of TouchCheck, move the slider bar all the way to the right (this can always be adjusted back).
4. Uncheck the box to the left of Tap to Click.
5. Move the slider in the Touch Sensitivity area to the right until it is 3/4 of the way toward Heavy Touch.
6. Click Apply, then click OK.
7. Click the X in the upper-right corner to close the Dell Touchpad Utility.

How can I change the settings on my Dell Inspiron E1405 touchpad? I don't find "Mouse" or "Printers and Other Hardware" listed in the Control Panel. I want to speed up the movement of the touchpad but I...

I think that the E1405 uses the Synaptics Touchpad, so the settings should be found under Start > Programs > Synaptics. However, if it is not there, then try C:\Program Files\Synaptics. The application that controls the settings should be found in one of those two places. Good luck!

Disable trackball inspiron 4100

This is a common problem that affected a host of dell models which had a 'trackball' or whatever the little 'nib' in the middle of the keyboard is called?
You can try to remove the 'Synaptics pointing Device' in add/remove programs. This may help.

There is one and only one way to fix this issue, you have to lift the keyboard and disconnect the 'trackball' thingy from the mainboard....do not disconnect the touchpad, the touchpad itself is not the problem but suffers from the drift caused by the malfunctioning ball in the middle of the keyboard.
the fix above u will lose use of the 'ball' but not the touchpad, and you wont be tempted to smash the laptop off the wall .

if you want to know how to get at the connectors under the keyboard goto:

http://support.dell.com/support/edoc...m_en/index.htm

look in 'Removing and Replacing Parts'
Follow the steps to remove the keyboard.

Click on this link or copy and paste the complete link into your browser.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

Bios continous beep, repeated ////, intermittent touchpad issue

The beeping when powering on is from the keyboard buffer being filled up by a stuck key. Same thing in windows. Best bet is to just replace it as it is pretty cheap.

Here is a link for one for $25

Easy to swap out also , here is a step by step

Inspiron 1525 keyboard and touchpad locked at bootup. Unable to enter user password to load Vista. HELP!

My friend has one of these and I really Dont know why but VIsta is always the Operating system that causes this.
Try this: at the log in screen press the F9 key see if it unlocks. unfortunately i doubt that that worked but hey it was a try
Now
try this: at the bottom of your laptop there should be a lever that releases the battery (remove the battery) leave it out and use your power cord only to boot the system. that usually works for me.
Hope that fixes your problem. Thanks for posting on Fixya.com
