It can be replaced but the new one will look just like in a few weeks anyway. Its just thin sheet steel uncoated and the heat comes right through that vent that is why it looks like that as far as rough edges just use a piece of sand paper or emory board or steel wool and rub it smooth. suff gets caught on the grate and the heat can burn it all the black is lint that melted on it but a new one look just like it in like i said a few weeks but to be safe and make sure its not getting to hot get a thermometer and check the temperature during low heat and high heat drying. low around 135f and high around 160f if it goes up over 170 there is a problem you may want a pro to check the unit.
@acyz1 I’m actually in the middle of doing what you had advised However I am worried because it seems that the dryer grate is tearing up my sponge as I am scrubbing and even though I rubbed in the barkeepers friend to the sponge (just barely damp) it is still flaking off and getting stuck behind the grate where I can no longer get the sponge to wipe it ?? I don’t know what to do!!
SOURCE: Back heating grate inside dryer has become dark like it's burnt
I used Bartender's Friend. You can find it at Home Depot. Its best to put it on a sponge, rub it on and let it set for about 5. Then scrub with a steel pot cleaner or copper one. It hard to do since the grid is in the back of the dryer but it came off!! Basically, clean it like you would a burnt pot or pan with the Bartender's Friend.
