18 HP Kohler Magnum engine. What is the compression?

Are you asking for leak down pressure, bmep, or compression ratio? Depending on the hours on any L-head engine the carbon deposits will create higher pressure. Running the engine while spraying water as from a Windex bottle will clean them out.

What to do? I have a craftsman GT 5000 with a 25 HP Kohler and it will run for about 10 minutes and then start cutting out and die. I have changed the fuel filter with no resolve. What should I look at...

Make sure the choke is coming off. Check the compression. Many times the head gasket may leak when the engine heats up. Also check for spark sometimes the magneto can heat up and quit after running a while. See if it will run if you prime with a little fuel, if so ,some of the Kohler engines this size have a fuel pump that could be failing. Check for vapor lock. It takes air and fuel properly mixed, spark and compression any of these missing the engine dies.

I have 16 hp Kohler engine with a compression release not working, help.

i have a Kohler 16 Magnum opposed cylinder engine and it wont crank over with the spark plugs in it,battery and starter are both good, its an aluminum engine and i have seen several of the Kohler engines break the automatic compression release on the cam gear and they seem to lock up while trying to start, pull the plugs and the crank fine,Kokler is the most expensive engine i have seen and their parts are outrageously priced, old Kokler was a good engine, newer ones in my opinion are junk,i work at a small engine shop,i have seen new Kohler engines with a broken ACRs,i work at a second job,we got a new supervisor that worked for Kohler before her came to our plant,he said he worked customer service at Kohler and he heard complaints constantly from people using their engines and the returns were out the roof on their engines, what im saying is i wont ever but another Kohler unless itsm an old one,Thanks Tommy

How much compression should a kohler 25 hp engine have

hi there

there are no published compression limits for kohler

the prefered method is to have the cylinders leak tested , because of the decompressor action built in while trying to compression test

but off the top of my head most machines would run best with a minimum of 100 psi or better
given that these have a compression ratio of 9:1

you could work it out

9:1 X 14.7 PSI ( 1 amtmosphere ) @ sea level = 131.00 psi

compression ratio = swept cylinder volume + clearance volume (@ tdc) divided by clearance volume

here is web site for obtaing service manual

select command pro twin -ch/cv 17-26

go to service manuals , select sm 24-690-07 file is 8.82 Mb and double click it and save a copy to your hard drive

cheers hope it helps

I have a horse model about 35 years old with a kohler motor 7 horse. What new motor fits. serial no. 360331

In my opinion, (which doesn't count for much, I know) the 7hp Kohler Troy Bilt Horse tiller was the best tiller ever made. Those tillers lasted forever if they were taken care of. I've got one of the 8hp Kohler versions, but it's just not the same.

It's become a lot harder to find an engine to replace these engines. You'll most certainly want to go to a Briggs and Stratton dealer and have them look it up. You need a 3/4" crank, 2 7/8" long with a keyway, tapped for a bolt to hold on the pulley and reverse disc. IF you find an engine to fit, you'll likely need to have a custom throttle cable made up to replace the current one. A good small engine dealer should be able to help you.

Now for the bad news. The 7hp Kohler was a cast iron engine. Any replacement engine you find will likely be an aluminum block with a cast iron sleeve and therefore, much lighter. What this means is the balance of the tiller, from front to back, is going to be thrown off. The result is - it will be MUCH harder to pick up the rear of the tiller when you want to turn at the end of the garden. You will most likely need to either put on one of the bumpers (if you can find one to fit) or figure out a way to hang some weight on the engine. I've seen people do some creative things to get the balance back. Whatever you do, it just won't be the same as that great 7hp Kohler. I'd suggest trying to rebuild it - if possible!

15 HP OHV Kohler engine with no compression

Have you checked for a bad head gasket?

Check the intake valve springs or the intake valve shafts to be sure they aren't stuck open. Another cause could be excessive carbon build up on the intake valve causing them to not seal.

If you've gone this far, you could try a compression leak down test. If you still have the push rods out, you can use or get an adapter that will allow you to pressurize the cylinder(s) with air by removing the spark plug. Apply 70-80 psi air directly to the cylinder (the cylinder may go to BDC (bottom dead center) but if you don't have any push rods, the valves can't open.

Listen carefully - if you hear air leaking out of the carb, it's a bad intake valve. If you hear air from the exhaust, it's an exhaust valve. If you hear air from the crankcase breather, it's piston rings.
