It's most likely the locking switch on the edge of the memory card. Secure Digital cards have a locking mechanism on the side of the card to prevent accidental erasing of the data (that's the "secure" part of secure digital). Just slide the switch away from the locked position and try it in the camera again.

Make sure you are using an SD card and not an SDHC card. The SDHC protocol is newer than your camera, and your camera does not support it. SD cards have capacities up to 2 GB. Your camera should work properly with any SD or MMC card.

Make sure you always turn off camera before inserting or removing SD cards.
Try reformatting the card using the camera settings. Doesn't work? Try reformatting the card on your computer assuming you have card reader in it. Doesn't work? Try using the card in another devise. Works? Cameras in trouble. Doesn't work. Bad or corrupted card.
Lastly make sure you set the camera to use the card and not the internal memory.

Could be that you have the wrong memory card.
SD600 will only work with the old SD cards, but the SD780 will take the SDHC cards.
SDHC was intended to give 4gb or more of storage, while the old SD started as 16 mb. Different cameras have different limits, but it is always best to assume that the practical limit on an SD card is 2mb. Even if the SD780 will take the SDHC cards, it can be more practical to only carry 2GB SD cards and know that they will fit either camera
