The plug prong broke on my Electrolux Epic 6500 SR vacuum. I cut it off and was going to replace it with a new plug. However, I mistakenly rewound the cord and it went all the way into the body.

You will likely have to install a new cord reel. Cord reels have a long tightly wound steel spring which can fly out causing injury if you attempt to take it apart.

Why does my plug get extremely warm or hot?

Inside the wire, several strands of wire are broke. Heat is caused by less strands of wire that have to carry more current in amps. This is a safety and fire hazard. Cut the old plug off by cutting the cord about 2 inches away from the plug. Strip the wires carefully. Do not cut or break off any strands of wire. Install a new plug. Make sure you buy a round plug that has a round opening for your round cord. A lot of plugs are for flat type of cords only.

How do I open a Kenmore 116 Vacuum?

You shouldn't need to remove the cord just to put a new plug on. Just cut the end off about 2 inches back, strip the outer insulation and the wire ends and install the new plug. Make sure there are no stray strands of wire hanging out from under the screws. I always solder the ends, so that I am dealing with a solid wire rather than twisted strands.

No power from Kirby!!

Determine if the headlight works before anything else. If the light works but the motor won't you have power thru the vac and the problem is internal possibly motor brushes... or a loose wire on the inside connecting to the switch.
If the light goes out is likely a switch or cord problem. Switches on these vacs break more often than cords. What you see on top is the switch button, not the actually internal switch, however a switch does not normally fail while the vac is running, that sounds more like a loose connection or a bad cord.
So isolate the cord. Unplug it at both ends and plug lamp ( or test meter) into the cord into the cord and gently wiggle where the plug end meets the cord. If the lamp goes on and off the issue is the cord. You can buy a replacement specific to the Kirby series and plug it in yourself. If this s does not isolate the problem, take it to a service center. Kirby is very intricate inside.

Wont power up

first in could be that your power cord has been bent and twisted too much and the wire has broke inside the cord or the wires could have come off the motor or the motor could have fried.

Bissell 6900 stopped working how do I open the thing?

Bissell 6900 Digipro ON OFF Power Switch failed. I found the wire connectors for the power switch were corroded. I fixed this by soldering the wires directly to the terminals leading to the motor. To access the circuit board and the on.off power switch I pryed off the cover for the on /off power switch and the cover for the cord retraction leaver. The covers are held on by two tabs that extend under the red cover on the top of the vacuum. Push the switch cover away from the red cover while prying the cover upwards, You may damage the two tabs on the switch cover, as I did, but afterwards, the cover went back in place and appears to work okay. WARNING: This is a home made repair of a 120 VAC circuit. If you are un qualifued to do this repair you face serious risk of a faulty solder and fire inside the vaccuum cleaner. 4fd9446.jpg78baa14.jpg

DYSON DC05

My friends Dyson DC05 was loosing suction and then it stopped altogether one day. When she took the filters out there was black soot in them so it was obvious that the motor had burnt out. I think this happened because she wasn't cleaning the filters regularly (go do yours now!) I replaced the motor myself and wrote a guide with photo's at www.tasweb.org

Electrolux Lux 7000 retractable power cord

The trim pieces along the sides just pull off seperating the two housings. The back portion where the retract drum is is held by two plastic tangs on top inside. use a screwdriver to pry the ring down to dislodge the tangs. the bottom part will lift off. remove the front part using two screws just below the hinge. the retract has a long coil spring wound around a free spinning hub. there are two "tangs" inside that engage a ratchet-pawl assembly. you'll need to rotate the drum to rewind the spring onto its hub.
