If you have a multimeter test there is voltage at the cigar lighter in the dashboard. Try a different gadget in it as the issue could be the sat nav not the cigar lighter.

Get into the settings (I think its a spanner icon) then look for the voice options - some lips if I remember correctly. Select that and change your language back. Another option is to press the reset button, which is a small hole (unmarked) on the rear of the device where the holder clicks in, but it can be a bit difficult to find. Let me know if this helps.
you need to install the update from this link, I've just done it and my Aytobe sat nav is working much better and it's holding a charge too http://www.aytobe.com/html/updates.html
You have to find someone who bought a Mio C220 with europe maps on their cd that came with their unit. You can download map from their cd using a 1gb sd card plugged into your computer.
Or try Ebay.
Turn the device off( from the back button) press volume up and the flag button( third from the right) in the same time and power on the device. Keep pressed the two buttons untill a screen shows . Press ok and then another ok. Then restart the device. This will do it
I too just got mine from Santa... it's designed to operate while plugged into the lighter. It also charges the Li ion battery. If the Garmin screen comes on while you are using it I would suspect an error or what ever. (you DID move the little switch on the top left corner to unlock didn't you?) Just call their number 800 800-1020 and ask them. They were most helpful and were there well after the hours posted in the instruction book.
I have fixed my son's unit twice with the same problem ove the last 18 months.
First remove the 4 screws from the corner on the back.
Then gently pry the back off being careful of the speaker wires attached to the main board.
You can't miss the battery as it's the biggest thing there. Follow the wires to the plug which will probably be hidden under a piece of black tape. Unplug the battery and let it stand for 10 minutes. Plug the battery back in and reassemble!
