Suddenly my pc re-boots when I plug my ipod into the front usb.

I had prevsiously had no problems plugging my ipod 4g into the front 2.0 usb port on my pc and was able to sync music using Itunes. Then all of a sudden (I think when XP Service Pack 3 installed on my pc) now my system goes to a black screen saying that a recent change in software/hardware has been made and the system needs to shut down to protect files.

If I plug the Ipod into the back usb ports the pc shuts down. If I plug my camera or phone into the front usb 2.0 port they work fine. I re-installed the drivers because at one point they weren't recognizing music cd's and that seems to have been fixed. I've clicked on properties for the USB's in device manager and they say they are working fine.

Please help!

Uninstall service pack 3 and ignore it when it asks you to re install it. go to add remove programs and uninstall it. obviously it worked befor. that is the solution. you dont need sp3 anyway.

If I Insert USB in the USB entrance before I start my PC it will hang up until i remove it I think problem in USB entrance how can I solve it? thnx

It is my pleasure to guide you.

A computer has USB ports on the back and on the front of most modern units. USB is what is called "usb hot swap". The pc can be on when the USB devices are plugged in or unplugged and the OS should recognize it. So if the pc hangs up there may be something else wrong.

1. Try unplugging all USB devices, boot the pc without any plugged in. Choose one device and plug it into each port. Wait until the OS recognizes the device. You will see a box come up with different options, one is at the bottom that allows you to open explorer. You can pick it or just hit the escape key to void the selection. (You do not need to reboot to try the rest of the USB Ports) Do this to all USB ports, both front and back. I know this will take time but you need to eliminate all the USB ports to make sure they are not the problem. Once you know that the USB ports are all good then the next step is

2. Now take each device and plug one at a time into any of the ports. I would use one on the front of the pc, makes it easier. Again let the OS see that it is there and prompt you for action.

3. If all your devices work after this testing, then plug everything back in and reboot the pc.

4. Have you made any changes in the BIOS? May be reset the BIOS lately?

This may sound like strange question but have you installed the OS to the USB device? Some Devices/OS's/PC's allow booting from USB devices. If the computer is trying to boot from USB it will cause terrible slow down in perfromance, check your "Boot Priority" Settings in the BIOS? The boot priority should list the HD Drive as the first boot drive.

Good luck and please post back that you are successful, giving thumbs up, or that I can be more help.

I have an ipod touch 2nd gen and it wont recoginize anything when docked with my IDJ2? Confused??? I put a flash drive in a USB port they all come right up!!

connect the ipod to PC..... first make sure you have the latest Itunes (http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/) 10.2.2 now plug ipod to PC..... Itunes should pop up automatic... now check to see if your ipod has the latest firmware for its generation (ipod touch 2gen) if not update it, this should also help the docking problems...now (always always eject your ipod, do not ever ever just unplug the ipod)

Usb ports not recognizing pen drive, external drive, ipods or iphones but 2 out of 3 usb ports will charge the ipod and iphone. please help!! I've tried unplugging, removing battery, device manager says...

Generally USB ports are part of the motherboard so you will not be able to replace just the USB ports. you can try to uninstall the USB controllers in device manager then reboot your computer. they should automatically get reinstalled. also try booting to safemode and check if it will recognize your USB devices.

*if you get a pop up for found new hardware when you plug in any of your USB devices then it would usually indicate that the hardware is working fine and the problem is with your OS

Wont charge

1.) Was the computer turned on and booted up?
*The USB ports provide no power under most computers when they are not on.

2.) Does the iPod work when plugged to the cable?
*If so then you more than likely have a faulty battery or port that is not allowing charging.

IPod's USB cable causes black screen...HELP

First of all thanks for posting so much info, it helps us give more concise answers!

I'd be tempted to be thinking along the lines of a software issue as well. 2 quick things to try 1st; what happens when you plug it in to a different USB port? Have you downloaded the latest version of iTunes?

My front usb ports on my computer suddenly stopped working. I do have vista, and I swear the problem arose after an update. I can plug my ipod into them, and it charges my ipod, but it does not open...

Go to Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-System Restore and back your computer's date to some time before you installed this update. You will then know if the update actually caused the problem.

I cant get music on to my ipod.

  • Install Apple iTune from apple.com
  • Ensure that USB ports are enabled in the BIOS (Press F2 at the boot up to get into BIOS)
  • Plug your ipod into the usb port (preferrably in a usb 2.0 port)
  • Try with other ports too, if problem persist.

New iPod Nano 4G won't connect to iTunes.

Hi Paige,

  • First reset the device by pressing and holding Menu & Select till the apple symbol appears
  • Next check the USB port on both the PC and ipod are clear of dust etc.
  • Download and install the latest iTunes from the Apple site.
  • Connect the ipod to a USB port directly on the back of your PC (ie, not a USB hub or keyboard etc.)
  • If iTunes recognises it (properly or improperly) and suggests an ipod software update, do this.
  • On the main ipod page of iTunes press the restore button and choose the bottom option (if it gives you any) to restore the ipod to manufacturers settings.
  • After a couple of restarts once its done it should be fine.
All the best
