The thing that immediately comes to mind is a faulty door switch or latch. The door switch can be replaced and you might be ok. But the latch would be more tricky to check. Sometimes if dishwasher is not level or if the door springs are misalinged the door tends to slip and release the latch due to pressure. It works when you open and shut. But not sure about the night time cycle. That sounds a bit creepy if it starts again by itself. Why not put a tape around the door and then start. That will help eliminate the obvious ones. The other thing that exends dishwasher cycle time is the lack of adequate water temperature. Could be heater or thermostat or both.

see this causes and use the common sense.God bless you When your dishwasher door has a problem, check these:LatchSpringsHingesDoor sealLatchThe
latch on many dishwashers is adjustable. If your door is easy to close
but difficult to latch, adjust the latch to let the door close more
easily. If you can't see any way to adjust the latch, yours may be fixed
in a certain position. Check for other reasons for the latching
problem.If
the latch has worn out in a way that makes it impossible for you to
close the door properly, you probably need to replace the latch. SpringsYour
dishwasher has two springs that counterbalance the weight of the door.
If either or both of these are broken, the door feels quite heavy and
you need to replace both springs.HingesThe
hinges are important to the door closing properly. If they're bent or
deformed, you probably need to replace them. Once bent, only rarely can
they be straightened well enough.Door sealIf
your dishwasher is new--or if you have just replaced a door seal--the
door may be difficult to latch for a week or two. If the tightness
persists, though, try adjusting the latch, if it's adjustable. If it's
not adjustable, there's probably nothing you can do immediately. But try
running the dishwasher on the highest heat cycle to help the seal
conform to the door. Otherwise, the seal should compress over time.
Thanks for using FixYa. Sorry, but I don't have good news for you,
unfortunately it is time to replace the door latch, hope you understand there
is nothing else that you can do with the latch as every other part is working
fine. Please accept the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for
further assistance.
I just had this problem and it seemed to be fairly easy to fix. Some times when you open and close the door interrupting washing cycles, the latch will think it is already latched. Even though it will still close with pressure, it seems like it will pop back out on you. Here's the fix. If you open the door, you will see a white plastic accepting latch that can be flipped back into the fully open direction using a screwdriver. That seemed to do the trick.
When did this start happening, was it all of a sudden.what have you done differently..check that one of the baskets isnt stopping the door from closing all the way..or the door latch may just be broken..or somebody has sat on the door while open & its bent.
Once the gasket is in place, check it for fit against the door frame. It should fit tightly with no cracks or bulges between the gasket and the frame. If necessary, tighten or loosen the retaining screws, or refit the gasket in the clips or the door channel. Then run the machine through a washing sequence and check for leaks.
If you spot a leak, and the gasket seems to be properly in place, try adjusting the door latch. The trick is to position the gasket against the frame of the door without flattening the gasket or squeezing it too flat when the door is latched properly. Adjust the latch or the gasket until it fits snugly against the door frame.
Servicing the Door Latch
The latch on a dishwasher door is opened and closed repeatedly, and this hard use can lead to mechanical problems. The latch may be loose, or it may have slipped out of position, throwing the alignment off and preventing the door from closing properly. When this happens, the latch does not engage properly, and the dishwasher will not start.
In many cases, you may be able to solve the problem by adjusting the position of the latch. Move the latch slightly by loosening the screws that hold it. Slide the latch with your fingers or pliers; the screw slots are made especially for this purpose. Close and open the door to see whether the latch is properly aligned. Tighten the screws to hold it in the correct position.
After repositioning the latch, check to see if it's working properly. Close and latch the door and turn the control knob to the ON position. If the dishwasher doesn't start, the latch is faulty. Replace it with a new latch, connecting it the same way the old one was connected. You may have to move the new latch back and forth several times before it works properly.
