Assuming you have your windows 8.1 on disks, make sure your HP is set to boot from disk and put disk in and boot your computer up. The windows install should start and you can choose to delete Ubuntu and install windows. Remove any partitions that it displays and choose to install windows on the entire disk. After that just follow the prompts and windows will install.

as i understand from your text you have already connected the hard disks.

NTLDR is the loader files that start your windows operating system. the problem could be due to one of the following

1- one of the hard disk other than your "c" drive also has windows installed on it. if windows in still on it then it is causing the problem.

2- one of your drives has had windows on it but deleted. if windows has been it and deleted it has not been done correctly. you need to format that drive clean.

3- hard disk boot priority in the CMOS setup need to be changed. at boot time press Delete or F2 to get to the Bios screen. look for hard disk boot priority and set to show your current "c" drive as the first drive.

if you need it to boot still, install another OS and delete the folders of the original one or after a hard disk repartition.

Try the following, You need a bootable Windows CD/DVD for this
(1)Set your BIOS setting to boot from CD/DVD ROM first (before the Hard Disk or any other media)
(2)In order to set this priority resart your computer and as the first any information appears on screen start pressing "F2" and "DEL" keys swiftly and alternatively. A new screen appears....
(3)Look for "boot priority" and take the CD/DVD drive on top of the list. You need to experiment this a little because every PC BIOS has a different format to make these settings
(4) Insert your bootable Windows CD/DVD in your computer and boot from it.
(5)You will be asked to Press any key to boot from CD.......
(6)Press any key
(7)The Windows installation screen will appear.
(8)In the setup carefully select delete and select the partition where you want to install Windows.
You should have adequate space for Windows.
(9) Be careful do not touch the partition where the Linux is installed
(10) Once you have deleted the partition carefully Format it or make a Quick format.
(11)After that your Windows installation should start.
The rest is very intuitive......

When the computer starts it flashes up press f2or delete or some other key to enter setup. Go through the settings and there should be one that will allow you to change the boot device. It sounds to me like it is set to boot from the cd rom drive only. Change it to boot from the hard drive and save changes to CMOS and restart the computer. The computer should now boot from the hard drive.

Put a Windows XP disk (has to be the full version not an upgrade) into the CD drive and the computer will ask to "press any key to boot from CD". Press a key. Follow the prompts, It is important to delete the partition when asked. Then recreate it. Format the drive with NTFS file system. The setup will go on to reinstall windows automatically.

Now, the only challenge is to reload any software drivers for components Windows does not find automatically. This is a little tricky. Do google search of Acer drivers or go to www.drivers.com.

Also, remember all your software programs need to be re-installed. For example, your Microsoft Office (word, excel, etc). Any games, any virus protection, Quickbooks, etc. The printer software also needs to be re-installed. Hopefully you still have the original disk or if its a Hewlett Packard go to their website.

Your laptop should have come with a recovery disk, you will need to boot to that disk following the onscreen steps for formatting and restoring the operating system files. Furthermore, if your system did not come with a recovery disk, or you have a Windows XP/Vista disk you can boot to that instead.

Windows XP Install:

After the installation system boots, the setup prompt will prompt you for searching the system for previously installed versions of Windows; bypass the recovery option after the search is complete. The setup will then display a list of Hard Drives to install Windows; follow the key for deleting the partition (press "D" to delete). Once the partition has been deleted highlight the "free hard drive space" and press "Enter" then you will be prompted to format the drive and install Windows. Moreover, you should right down the Windows Product Key off the sticker on the bottom of your laptop; you'll be asked for that key after the setup restarts your computer assuming you are using that license for that version of Windows.

Windows Vista Install:

When you boot to the Vista DVD you will be prompted to enter the product key as soon as the setup loads. Select the Hard Drive with the mouse, then left-click the format button on the right pane. Continue with the installation.

The Boot Configuration Data (BCD) store contains boot configuration parameters and controls how the operating system is started in Microsoft®Windows Vista.
Remove Windows Vista From Dual Boot System Windows Vista works slightly different from earlier versions of Windows when installed on a dual boot system, in that it has a completely different boot loader.
When Windows Vista is first installed as a dual boot operating system a new boot folder is added to the root directory of your PC. This is a hidden file and therefore is not noticed. When you boot your PC a menu appears with the following options:

• Earlier versions of Windows
• Windows Vista

Clicking the Windows Vista option will boot the PC into Windows Vista. If, however, you select the earlier versions of Windows option, another menu will appear from which you can choose Windows XP or whatever earlier version - Windows 2000 or Windows 2003 server - you installed first.
Because of this new boot loader it is not as easy to remove Vista from a dual boot system scenario. Simply deleting the Vista partition will, of course, remove Windows Vista, but, unfortunately, it will not remove the Windows Vista boot loader. For this reason, if you simply delete the Windows Vista partition, on rebooting your machine you will not automatically boot into Windows XP (or an earlier version). Instead you will once again be presented with a menu from which you have to choose which operating system you wish to boot to.
Obviously, once you have removed the boot loader and rebooted the Vista operating system will still be on the partition you originally installed it on. To remove Vista completely you will need to Delete the partition that Windows Vista was installed upon.
To remove this menu, or more to the point, the boot loader, proceed as follows:
1/ Boot the PC to Windows Vista
2/ Ensure you are logged onto the Internet and then download the freeware boot loader utility VistaBootPro (www.vistabootpro.org)
3/ Once you have downloaded VistaBootPro, install it on your machine
4/ During Install VistaBootPro will install an icon on your desktop
5/ Locate the VistaBootPro icon and Right Click on it. Then, from the drop down menu, Click on the Run As Administrator option
6/ User Account Control (UAC) will pop up and ask for permission to run the program
7/ After you have given UAC permission - you must be the administrator or have administrator privileges - VistaBootPro will run.
8/ Once VistaBootPro opens, Click on the Bootloader tab
9/ In the Bootloader Maintenance section, Click on the Radio button next to the option marked 'Uninstall the Vista Bootloader (Used to restore Legacy OS) option' and then Click the Apply button
10/ Finally Reboot your PC
11/ On rebooting your machine you will boot directly into Windows XP (or an earlier operating system). No menu will appear.
12/ All that is left to do now is to delete the partition which originally contained Windows Vista. (Assuming you wish to remove the Vista partition from your hard drive).
