How it Works

Stone and Mulch Calculators

As an example, let's use 500 square feet to be mulched at a
3" depth.
  1. First, the depth must be converted to feet. To convert inches to feet, simply divide inches by 12, the number of inches in a foot.

So for our example: 3 inches divided by 12 equals a 0.25 foot depth.
  2. Now that we have the depth in feet, we can multiply the depth by the area.

So for our example: 0.25 foot depth times 500 square feet equals 125 cubic feet.
  3. If you are calculating 0.5, 2, or 3, cubic foot bags, simply divide 125 cubic feet by the size of the bag.

So for our example: if we are using 2 cubic foot bags, we can divide 125 cubic feet by 2 which equals 62.5 bags.
  4. If you are calculating cubic yards, we need to convert 125 cubic feet to cubic yards by dividing by 27. One cubic yard is equal to 27 cubic feet, see the diagram below.

So for our example: 125 cubic feet divided by 27 equals 4.63 cubic yards.

You need to order mulch for a 25 cubic foot flower bed area. The mulch can only be ordered in cubic yards. How much mulch should you order?

Wait wait.

Do you mean a 25 SQUARE foot flower bed. You do say flower bed "area".

If so the answer is different. 1 cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. So, just one cubic yard will cover 27 SQUARE feet to a depth of 1 foot. (27 x 1 = 27).

I'd say on that basis you need 1/2 cubic yard. The wisdom I've seen says to cover soil with about 4" of mulch.

I need to know how many cubic feet of mulch to put in my flower bed?

How big is your flower bed in square feet? How deep do you want the mulch to be? We multiply the two (in feet) to get the number of cubic feet.

For example, if your flowed bed is 10' by 15' and you want you much to be 6" deep, we would calculate the area of your flower bed as 10 x 15 or 150 square feet. We have to convert the mulch depth from 6' to 1/2' or 0.5'. We multiply the 150 square feet by 1/2' and get 75 cubic feet.

Good luck.

I'm buying 120 bags of mulch. each bag contains 2 cubic feet of mulch.so I'm trying to visualize how big this would be (w' x l' x h') PLEASE HELP ME OUT!!!

The Dimensions really depend on the shape of the bags. for visualization purposes the bed of a Ford F150 is about 55 cubic feet you're getting 240 cubic feet so that's close to 4.5 truck beds.

How many cubic yards is 3600 square feet in 6 inches?

  1. Calculate
    • Calculate your area (see below)
    • Calculate your volume; Multiply area times the depth, this will be volume in cubic feet
    • Calculate your cubic yards; Divide cubic feet by 27 to convert to cubic yards and this is your answer.
    • Where (ft2) = square foot, (ft3) = cubic foot, (yd3) = cubic yard

Please help- refrigerator cubic feet answer- 65 inches high , 33.5 inches wide . 29 inches depth. Thanks

If those measurements are the inside dimensions it is easy except you need the width L X H X W = AREA but since you are in inches you need feet. so divide that but 1728 it comes out to 36.5

Convert 2,000 cubic ft to sq ft

Cubic foot is a unit of volume. Square foot is a unit of area. There is no conversion.

Let's say you have 2000 cubic feet of mulch. That can cover a 2000 square foot yard one foot deep. It can also cover a one square foot flowerbed 2000 feet deep.

What is the area of 2 cubic feet of mulch

That depends on how thin you spread the mulch. 2 cubic feet of mulch spread a foot thick covers 2 square feet. The same amount of mulch spread an inch thick covers 24 square feet.
