Sounds like a driver problem. Make sure you have all the updates. If the problem started after a recent update, a driver rollback may be needed.
If it is not the driver, then it might be a setting in the way your laptop handles video. Go into your ATI or nvidia setting under control panel. Review all of your setting and make sure nothing unusual is set, or find a 'restore to defaults' button if it has one.

Hi there!
Can you remember what happened when this started? Were you trying to update the driver for your graphics card? Or did it just happen on its own?
Have you tried booting into Safe Mode yet? I assume your operating system is a version of Windows.
To boot into safe mode, press F8 repeatedly, every second or two during boot. If you can reach the Safe Mode options screen, select "Safe Mode" and press enter.
If the machine boots into Safe Mode and displays video correctly, go into Device Manager and uninstall the driver for your graphics card. To do this:
1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type: devmgmt.msc
4. Expand Display Adapters
5. Right-click the graphics card and select "Uninstall"
Once that process is complete, restart the laptop and observe the behavior of the video. If the problem persists, its source may be more complicated and related to hardware.
If the BIOS flash screen is skewed from the get-go, I suggest you contact HP Support for more guided assistance. You can also check the warranty status of your laptop HERE. If the warranty is still in effect, you should be able to fix the laptop without a single cost to you.
If the warranty is no longer in effect, the fix for this may cost you.
I hope this helps! Feel free to respond if you have any further questions.

SOURCE: Lenovo G550 (2958-ACU) the display is scrambled/folded
Your computer uses Onboard graphics(Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD) which means the GPU is embedded into the motherboard. The problem is most likely to be the GPU as you have predicted. If your laptop is under warranty you should push for a replacement as opening it will void your warranty. However if its out of warranty then you will need to remove the keyboard to access it. Check for bad connectors from the video card. Unplug the connectors wipe them with a cloth and then plug them back in. Power up and see if it resolves the issue.
NOTE: TO AVOID DAMAGING THE BOARD COMPONENTS WITH ESD AN ESD WRIST STRAP IS MANDATORY FOR THIS FIX .
Hope this helps,
Sai.
