Try to get, from the eBay seller, any/all PoP document, etc. If you have that, you can register your device on TomTom website, and you'll be the first owner ... with all the privileges ... including latest map, TomTom Support, warranty, etc. If you can't get all the PoP documentation, you can still register your GPS device on the TomTom website. However, as a "second" owner, you may not get all of the "privileges" ... e.g. warranty, etc. (unless the eBay seller is an authorized TomTom distributor/seller.). You may get the lifetime map (feature) ... because that is usually associated with the specific TomTom device (serial no, etc.).

You can update software for free but not the MAPS unless you opted for a model with lifetime maps. Go to the link and register and see if you have Lifetime Maps.

How do I update lifetime maps

You need to go to the tom tom website. You must have registered your tom tom soon after purchase and provided proof that you bought it or they will not honor the updates.

Have got your device registered at TomTom? If so then you'd be able to download last maps whenever you connect device to your PC/Internet

HI, Bought tomtom go 710 from a charity sight on

It may be likely that the "registration" matter is related to the map ... and not the GPS device ... that one can register (as the owner) when the device is purchased new ... to get and load the latest map.
If this assumption is correct, your device would start up but not even get to the "driving screen" ... because there's no (valid) map.
You can first try to register the GPS device (on tomtom.com) against your name, etc., and opt to purchase a map (of your choice). With this purchase, you will download the map (software and data), and an activation code to validate the map. After that you should be able to use the GPS device (for that purchased map).
If you'd like additional instructions/options, let me know how I can reach you by email.

I have bought a second hand garmin, and the owner gave me the manual and free US navigation map. Recently he also provided me the 25 digit unlock code, but I cannot register or unlock maps, cos when i try...

The unlock code he gave you must be the map unlock code. IF it is you can unlock the map without registering. Details of how to unlock your map are at http://www.fixya.com/support/r6197735-no_detailed_maps_found_support_routing
There's more information there than you'll need so skip to the paragraph on unlocking the map.

If the previous owner deletes your satnav from his garmin account you should then be able to register it.

I have just bought a tomtom sd card of western europe overwritten with tomtom map of new Zealand.when inserted the tomtom520T just gets stuck on a tomtom picture page and nothing works ,any ideas,regards...

Assuming the maps have been registered for your device.........try resetting the device.
If the maps are not registered, it may eventually boot up, but you'll get a message saying that the maps are not authorised for this device.

Garmin nuvi 205w CAN'T UNLOCK MAPS don't have codes it is used...

You are out of luck. Garmin will only talk to and assist registered owners. The registered owner has to deregister the device before a new owner register it and update the maps.
