Probably cannot do this as printing with out ink can damage the printer head if the cartridge is empty , it is empty so replace the cartridge and reset it

My hp deskjet 6940 inkjet printer doesn't show me level of ink in cartridge

Print a diagnostic page If the steps above have not helped, print and evaluate a diagnostic page to see if the cartridges or the printer is causing the problem.
  1. Make sure the printer is on and loaded with unused, plain, white paper.
  2. Press and hold the Power button and then press the Cancel button. Release both buttons. The diagnostic page prints. Figure 1: Power and Cancel buttonsc00584735.gif 1 - Cancel button 2 - Power button
Step 4: Note which cartridges printed which areas of the diagnostic page You must identify which cartridge printed which part of the diagnostic page, so that if you find defects on the page, you will know which cartridge is the problem. However, you can install different combinations of print cartridges in your printer, and different cartridge combinations print different diagnostic page patterns. Your diagnostic page may not look exactly like the picture below, but the right and left cartridges will print in the same areas of the page no matter which cartridges are installed. Figure 2: Diagnostic page layout (the patterns in each area may look slightly different on your page)c00584715.gif 1 - Printed by the right cartridge 2 - Printed by the left cartridge NOTE: If you are printing in reserve mode (one cartridge is missing), the missing cartridge's area of the diagnostic page will be blank. Step 5: Check ink levels NOTE: If you have installed a refilled or remanufactured ink cartridge, or a cartridge that has been used in another product, the ink level indicator is inaccurate or unavailable. Look in the middle of the diagnostic page. The bars with "E" (for "empty") and "F" (for "full") at each end show the ink levels in the cartridges. As ink is used, the solid color changes to a faded color. Black ink not printing

Fix ink cartridge
I had same problem. I must have ran the clean cycle more than 30-50 times over a period of days. That never made any difference. I was about to toss the whole thing but figured I would try one more thing. If it didn't work I would be in no worse shape. Here is what I did.
Took an almost empty black cartridge and inject a lot of 100% Acetone to dilute ink. Left some black in it since I didn't want to think it was empty. Inserted this cartridge and ran the cleaning a few time. IT WORKED. I used my word processor program and filled a page with large bold font characters and printed a page or two. Each page cleared more nozzles. After doing this cleaning/printing a number of time, I put in the full good cartridge. Ran the cleaning a few time to eject any of the Acetone diluted ink. Ran the printed page a few time to remove more of the diluted ink.
Everything seems to work now.

Pixma 4200 compatible ink cartridge problem help

The ink detection is a critical function of the printer.

Ink actually acts as a lubricant for the heads, and running (Printing) without ink is equavalent to driving a car without oil.

I.E. It will seize eventually....

Hopefully you didn't print much without the ink, and your heads are still in good shape...

Here is a chip reset procedure....

With the original chip now attached to the compatible cartridge (you may need double sided tape to get the chip to stick well to the cartridge), and with the cartridge now in the printer, Press and hold the Reset/OK Button for 5 seconds to reset the chips.
  1. The "Ink Low" dialog box will pop up (similar to photo 1 below)
  2. Continue to print until the "ink has run out" dialog box pops up (similar to photo 2 Below) Click "OK" to continue to print.
  3. The "Ink Low" dialog box may reappear, if so repeat the first 2 steps
  4. Then the "once empty" dialog box will pop up (similar to photo 3 Below) Click "Yes" to continue to print
  5. The "Not Liable" dialog box will pop up (similar to photo 4 below). Click "Yes" to continue to print
  6. Continue to print until the "remaining level of ink" dialog box pops up (similar to photo 5 Below) Click "OK" to continue to print
  7. Another dialog box will pop up with the "press and hold the Resume" or "press and hold the Paper Feed" button (similar to photo 6). Press and hold the "STOP/RESET" button (for Canon MP Series) or "PAPER FEED" button (for Canon IP Series) for 5 seconds. DO NOT Click "Back" or "Cancel Printing"
  8. The "Ink Monitor" dialog box will appear and the printer will continue to print. (similar to photo 7) In the event that that the "press and hold the Resume " dialog box pops up again, Press and hold the Paper Feed Button or Stop/Reset Button for 5 seconds
