If the feed dog doesn't move, the nylon bobbin drive gear is broken and needs to be replaced. This is *the* most common problem with this machine.

Be sure you have the stitch length set high enough that the fabric will actually move instead of sewing mostly in one spot.

One other thing to check is the presser foot applying enough pressure to the fabric so that the feed dogs can grab the fabric? On the top left side of the machine, there is probably either a dial or a push-type button. That would most likely be the pressure adjustment. The tighter that is set, the harder the pressure the presser foot will apply and the more the feed dogs will grab the fabric.

Check that the feed dogs are in the "up" position so they will pull the fabric through the machine. Are the feed dogs actually moving forward, raising above the needle plate, pulling toward the back of the machine, and then dropping below the needleplate before moving forward again? If not, then the problem could be with the feed dogs.

Your machine appears to be a mechanical model. If so, it could be the machine needs a good over-all cleaning and oiling--a couple drops of fresh, good quality sewing machine oil every place that metal rubs on metal (no plastic parts, belts...). Feed dogs are frequently affected when the sewing machine does not receive regular maintenance.

SOURCE: backward stitching

Knowing which kind of machine you have helps alot. Just guessing but maybe the reverse mechanism is stuck and needs some oil in it to free it up. Or the buttonhole mechanism is stuck in reverse part of it.
Probably you should have it looked at.

SOURCE: thread jamming, wont feed material, sewing in one place

Try moving the stitch length dial to 4 or 5 - check the manual. You may have it in the position for very close together sewing. I had to do a lot of trying with my 4795 to get it to work right. I found that very thin thread, polyester kind, broke at the needle after a couple of stitches. I switched to coats & clarks thread and a Singer ball point needle and it works fine. Be sure your needle is inserted with the flat top toward the back of the machine. Good luck!

SOURCE: I purchased an older Singer Stylist zigzag model

I can definitely help you with the owners manual. Go to http://parts.singerco.com/IPinstManuals/457A_105_125_135_143A.pdf and you can download it direct from singer, no viruses, nothing. Just save it in Adobe format.

The bobbin thread problem is called a birds' nest and can be from a number of problems. First thing to do is to change your needle, especially if it was the one you bought the machine with. It may look perfectly straight to the naked eye. But it only needs to be a little bent to cause a problem. If this doesn't clear the problem up, make sure you're using a new bobbin, freshly wound. If the bobbin isn't wound properly or is an old bobbin that's slightly bent or not quite round, it'll cause problems, too. Finally, the machine may need a new bobbin casing. Do a google search for Singer sewing machine parts and search for a bobbin casing for a model 457. You'll remove the plate from the top of the machine CAREFULLY (the screws are small, so be careful not to lose them!). Take pictures if you need to with your cell phone so you can see what to do when you need to put the new casing in. Bobbin casings are usually $25-30. This is the last thing, and I would only do this if you see that thread is catching on something in the bobbin area when you're moving the wheel by hand.

I've tried to be clear on the last bit, but I realize it can be a little awkward. If you need any other help with that, please leave me a comment back. It goes straight to my email, so I'll see it quick and will get back to you right away. The manual doesn't help a lot with your bobbin problem, so I'll do whatever I can to help you through it and get you sewing. Good for you for finding a great garage sale find!

Singer 7033, how do you raise the dog feed.

The feed dogs on the 7033 shouldn't drop down. This model uses a cover over the feed dogs when doing free-motion sewing. To remove the cover, raise the needle and presser foot. Open the slide plate over the bobbin by sliding it towards you. Lift up the front edge of the cover and pull it away. Close the slide plate and lower the presser foot.
Many Singer manuals are available here: https://www.singer.com/support . The current link to the 7033 manual is https://res.cloudinary.com/singer-sewing/image/upload/fl_attachment/Singer-Website-Library/outdated_product/SINGER_7029_7033__7035_and_9410_Sewing_Machine.pdf . The cover is shown on page 8 of the manual. See page 12 for the picture of removing the feed dog cover.

I hope this helps. If the feed dogs are actually down and not covered, there is probably something broken in the sewing machine.

Material doesn't feed

Are your feed dogs down? If not check your stitch length or possibly it is set to tack stitch. What material are you trying to sew? If it is lightweight like tulle you will have to set your feed dogs. Check your manual on how to do this.

Singer sewing machine makes very tiny stitches at fast speed regardless of setting

Technically not a question, but I get your meaning.

The issue is probably caused by one of two things. First, the material may be very slippery. Does the material on either side of the stitch get shredded when sewing it?
Otherwise, it is likely a fault with the feed dogs. It sounds as if it is tight and is reverting to the short stitches. In this case, the feed mechanism needs to be serviced.

Machine won't feed material. I have to pull while sewing.

First of all stop pulling that will only bend your needle and cause further problems.

Check to make sure your feed dogs are engaged. There should be a switch somewhere around the sewing area front or back or perhaps under a flat bed attachment.

I have a Singer Stylist 513 & I cannot get the feed dogs raised.

The model 513 Singer has two gears which operate the feeding mechanism. If one of these gears is broken, the machine will run except the feed dogs will not move. This is a very common problem with this model.
