The needle won't go any further left on a zigzag than the midpoint. When going to the right more than setting 3 it hits the edge of the foot and/or the plate. Does this no matter the stitch selected. Is there anyway to fix this inexpensively? This is a group that sews for charity.
Take your machine for service. It needs a needlebar adjustment.

Be sure and use the correct sewing foot...the machine is probably reading the foot and won't let you make adjustments. Also make sure the needle plate is the correct one.

Maybe there's a problem with your
straight stitch needle plate .Try looking at it. Read Sewing machine reviews.

try a new needle
if the needle is still hitting the needle plate, then it's possible that the machine is out of time and needs to be adjusted, or there is something wrong with the needle bar.
