If you have tried all of the obvious fixes (turning on Hibernate from the Power Options Properties page, ensuring you have set either a button or a specific time into the power scheme), one other item that may stop hibernation is certain programs. Some programs have options built in that will stop your computer from going into hibernation when they are running. Depending on your level of experience, you can check your Task Manager to see what is running on your system. Do a search on the internet for any processes that you don't recognize. Then check them to see if they are the culprit. Another process to try is running your anti-virus anti-spyware programs. There are certain viruses and spyware that will take over your system and not allow hibernate. They will usually do this if they want to try and acess the internet to send out certain information or to use your computer to email spam. If either one of these processes does not solve the problem then I would either restore your latest back up, or if you don't have one available, reformat and reinstall your system.

To change the power settings in your Windows XP based PC:
1) Click Start, then open Control Panel, then click on Power and Maintenance option.
2) On the next window which opens, you will find a link "Power Options" Click on this link.
3) The next menu opens a tab marked as "Power Schemes". Here you will find a drop-down list marked as "Turn of Monitor" Select the time in minutes after which you want to turn off the monitor. (Monitors usually require a lot of power and this can be saved by turning off the monitor automatically after a short interval).
4) Important: Select "Never" option for Turn off Harddisk and System Standby menus.
5) Then click on Hibernate Tab on the top menu, tick the check box next to "Enable Hibernate".
6) Click on Apply, then OK

Brand and model? I'm pretty sure this is not a printer. Do you have XP or Vista on the machine?

I never said it was a printer, after I posted FixYa decided that. IBM Intellistation. w/ XP Pro.

I have tried this (I use XP Pro and I think your sug is for Vista?) and neither hibernate from the shutdown window nor hibernate from the power options window work, they are a no-op, they do NOTHING. I am back to the desktop after.
I need someone who is familiar with this area. I have tried the obvious things. There is maybe some reason to believe that it does not support hibernate and standby at the hardware level. I need someone who KNOWS.

This is a very young, very clean system. It has never been on the internet and has only a very few programs installed.
I believe that some four year old Intellistations are rumored not to support standby or hibernate. Do you KNOW if this is true or not, and if so, how to identify which models do NOT support standby/hibernate????
