handles may be in good condition but the lever on the latch itself may have came loose. your mostlikley looking at dismantelling the apolsery with the door closed to rectify it.
It sounds like the connecting rod popped out of its plastic connector. Pull the door panel off and check both ends of the rod. It must be unhooked at one end or the other.
I recommend pulling the door panel off and getting a better look. There are little nylon retainers that slip over the metal rods in the door which connect the door handles, locks, latches etc (usually on the ends of the rods). Quick guess is that the end of the rod is sliding in there but because its still clipped onto the rod, it appears to be all there, in its proper place and working correctly. I'm also guessing that there has been a lot of penetrating oil sprayed into the door in an attempt to free the tight lock mechanisms. In reality, allowing the broken parts to slide into a stuck position more easily. Pop the door pnl off, start wiggling and moving different parts of the lock, latch, handles etc... You may want to ask your wife to help turn the door lock key outside while you're watching things move inside. I'll bet the issue(s) become very clear in no time! Good luck!
That sounds like what happened to my neighbor. They came to the conclusion that someone tried to jam a screwdriver in the lock to open the door.As far as not openeing anymore, that happened to me and I had to replace the mechanism inside the door.I bought a used one for $5 and did it myself.A regular mechanic should be able to fix it however, you may end up needing to have 2 separate keys for your car if they replace the lock.1 for the ignition and other locks, and 1 for the drivers side lock.Call around a few places for a few estimates.Tell them the same as what you posted, they should be able to give a close estimate over the phone. Also, please read my tip about car keys.It is good free info.Good luck!
