Hi, Harald and the usual suspects are:
1. Instrument wiring harness connector corroded.
2. Faulty power or ground wire at the tachometer.
3. Broken, loose or corroded tachometer wire at the coil.
4. Short between the ignition coil and the tachometer.
5. Broken tachometer cable.
6. Faulty tachometer.

I assume you are referring to a Tach or Tachometer wire. American outboards are gray Japanese's ones like Suzuki have different color codes you can google that.

Aftermarket or factory tachometer? ignition coil pins A,B,C . B is white wire -this is tachometer signal to instrument cluster .

It is a long time since I wired a tacho to anything. Engines with conventional ignition and even engines with electronic ignition fitted (with a separate ignition coil) are relatively straightforward but you should obtain fitting instructions from the manufacturer of the meter or from the manufacturer of the engine where the engine is managed by an ECU. There might be a dedicated output for a tachometer.

It is important not to make a potentially expensive or inconvenient mistake unless you also like rowing.

i dont know what engine option you have
but most use the ignitor signal to do this.
later about 1996 the ECU uses CKP sensor to run the tach directly
in that case bad tach, bad wires to tach or bad power feed to it.
it only has 3 wires.

Is the engine reving high?if not find out if the tach runs off your distributor.cap and roator.there's a wire check if hooked up properly.need more info.

If it's a machanical tech check for a broen line from the engine. If electric check for + voltage to the tech if ok tech if bad
