The TV had been experiencing some color and picture distortion on the top half of the screen until it warmed up, then it was fine. Yesterday I powered it up and in about 5 minutes it went POW! I opened case and found voltage regulator Q401 DG301 on the SC card physically split in two. On shopJimmy.com they have a replacement part for the transistor for $5.95 and they have a repair kit which contains this transistor along with 14 other parts. Am I a fool to go for the single known bad part or should I get the whole kit?
The parts that referers almost alltimes in A set capacitors and resistors and sometimes diodes IF a transistor was shorted , allways use the KIT BUT look for a Service manual and observe the FUSE RESISTORS ON ANY STAGE . The most important thing is to measure the voltage on the testpoints a little tolerance can be there but resistors can be looking 100% but (one of the) the endcaps can be intermittend. thats why you should allways get a service kit , its can be enough but the cause is where it depends on the power supply or used capacitors . A little hint is to oversize the value with at least 6 until 15 volt , depending on the used dc that come out of the board (if example 25mf 10Volt comes out replace with 25mf 16V if the size will fit. if the capacitors are having a mountable size to soldering on the circuitboard.Beware this only an example suggestion what i mean http://www.electronicrepairguide.com/dell-e151fp-lcd-monitor-repair.html

On a plasma there are 2 buffer boards, upper and lower, it all depends which half of the screen is on as to which buffer to replace, the buffer boards are located usually on the left hand side if you have the back off the unit. You maybe able to reseat the ribbon cables and get the video back up

Is the tv still in warranty? The problem is the upper buffer board, it's a small board that controls the upper portion of the screen. You will have to consult a service center to get it, it's very easy to install

The TV needs a new Power Supply inside.

This sound more like a cable issue. Also check the leads going from your cable box to the set/ If you are using component cables one of them may be loose.

Hello,
Your power supply board is dead, u know basic electronics’ and soldering? Most of the times, the power supply board just have dead leakages gases capacitors. These capacitors always bulges up on it top,or puff up on it top.Replaced these gases leakages capacitors will get your TV power stable, and work again.Or tries websites like Shopjimmy.com,Ebay.com to buy a whole refurbish power supply board for the replacement.
hope this helps...

THX for the input. I replaced all the parts in the kit still had a short to ground. Sent both buffers to a Board repair place and was told un repairable, so I'm shopping for whole boards
