press the windows key and the R key at the same time. type 'eventvwr' no quotes and click on system on the left. then scroll down to the approximate time and date it happened. look for a red exclamation. it should tell you a different error that we can look up. it should say something at the top of the screen like 'kernel in page error' or something like that. once you get that you can troubleshoot easier.
Not sure if this is exactly a solution, but usually these crashes are font issues.
You could try deactivating fonts in your Suitcase, or font manager, then opening the files. Quark has a hard time with font conflicts, and usually just crashes without letting you know that was the problem.
Try updating Quark first and reopen the document, if the problem persists, remove the preference file - this may have become corrupt.
Often a Quark crash is related to corrupt fonts, or fonts sharing the same id number as others already on the machine. Do you use a font manager such as Suitcase?
Just Navigate to HDD>>Appliocations>>QuarkXPress 7 folder and create a folder by the name Preferences with P in upper case and then try to launch QuarkXPress.
