The first thing that pops into my mind is a sock (or some such) living in your water pump... (or a bad bearing... broken pulley
(let your imagination be your guide)).
If I knew your make & model... I'd be awesomely more CONFIDENT in telling you how to check (but nary a clue came through with your question).
It all boils down to DIY (do it yourself) or calling for service.
If you THINK you don't mind EXPERIMENTING with DIY...
search the web for your make+model+trouble (smell)...
An amazing number of people share their experiences for the (kind) EDIFICATION of others...
